Grand Rapids Press on Tablet PCs

Andy Kaiser writes a brief article on Tablet PCs for the Grand Rapids Press. His take: “Tablet PCs are a needed and handy new technology, but certain aspects need improvement.”

Overall his article is quite positive on the Tablet concept, although he still has some problems with the handwriting recognition and he’d also like to have touchscreen capabilities.

Generally, I’d agree with both points. There’s always going to be room for improvement with the handwriting recognition. Heck, even us humans have problems reading handwriting all the time. That’s the nature of the problem. Is the handwriting recognition better than what I’ve experienced on other devices? I’d say a definite yes. It sounds like Andy prefers the approach Palm has taken. I’m a little perplexed by this because with a Tablet PC I can just write–I don’t need to train the Tablet nor learn any special handwriting style. The handwriting recognition just works. But to each his own.

Interestingly, Andy doesn’t mention which Tablet PC he’s been using. Nor does he write about who he thinks would benefit the most from owning a Tablet PC. Students? Teachers? Doctors? Small business owners? Executives? Or all the above? 🙂
