Dennis sets the record straight at (Dennis and Rob’s new blog) GottaBeMobile as to whether ultra-mobile PCs already exist:
“…if people think this (referring to speculation about yet-to-be-announced devices) is the only UMPC out there, they have been asleep…They are already out there. Motion Computing has the LS800, which is a great piece of hardware. OQO has offerrings in this space as well…”
I don’t know about setting any records straight, but that post was generated by my own musings as I wondered what Motion, etc. felt about the upcoming “thing” 🙂 being announced.
Then I got an email from one of the OEM’s along the same lines, and whalla! — a conversation was born.
It’s amazing. There are people behind all these PR releases and company names out there. You just have to dig a bit to find them! And theya actually have some interesting things to say — if you listen and encourage them to express themselves.
It’s a conversation that came at the right time. Over the last couple weeks I’ve been thinking a lot about the “new” terminology that’s perculating up.
Terminology is extra important in the online world because most of us find and navigate to things via various keywords.
Consistent, unique keywords are quite useful. Keywords that have a variety of meanings aren’t so hot.
“Tablet” and “ink”, for instance, are mediocre keywords. “Tablet PC” on the other hand is a pretty good term. “Ultra-mobile PC” will probably be another good phrase. “Convertible Notebook” doesn’t look to bad either, but it’s going to take some further consumer adoption before it matches the Googling strength of say “Tablet PC.”
