Blogger Joshua Marshall asks for thoughts on switching to Apple

Blogger Joshua Marshall of TakingPointsMemo is asking for advice about switching from Windows to a Mac. Actually, he’s not just any Windows user. Joshua is a Tablet owner. He says he’s having a few problems with one of his current machines. I’m not sure if it’s a Tablet or not that he’s having trouble with. Either way, I know it can be extremely frustrating.

Reality though is that over the years I’ve seen people with all sorts of machines and brands run into troubles. Yes, some more than others. But when it’s you that’s stuck with a lemon, it’s the worst thing possible. Especially if it’s a machine that you rely on.

For now, I have a G4 sitting quietly. I don’t use it very much, but it’s a great system. Lan uses a Mac all day long at her job and thoroughly enjoys it–although she does most of her personal writing and email on a Windows machine at home. Point is, I’m not against Apple systems at all. I do, however, have more energies focused on Windows because as a developer there’s a greater market around it.

Joshua gives a few reasons why he’d like to stick with Windows. His three reasons are:

1. He has a large collection of tools that are Windows oriented.
2. He’s built up 20 years of Windows-specific knowledge.
3. He likes the Tablet form-factor, which Apple doesn’t have.

Despite this, Joshua is open to reader comments about switching to Apple.

Anyone have anything they’d like to share. A link is available on Joshua’s blog here.

Personally, I’d really like to own one of the new MacBook Pro systems. If only I knew for sure that they’d support Vista, I’d get one in a heartbeat. Why do I need an Apple system to run Windows? Because a dual boot configuration would be ideal for a developer such as me. It would be the best of both worlds. Of course, I’d still keep a Tablet or two, but I could see the MacBook becoming my preferred dev machine. If only….
