Great to see MSN releasing an SDK for MSN Messenger. (Official release Monday.)
Benjamin Bach blogs that all may not be rosey though:
“Activity API Restrictions
Your MSN Messenger Activity must not contain any functionality that would normally be controlled by the MSN Messenger client. This includes (but is not limited to) the following items:
Instant messaging
File transfer (for example, digital photos or sound files)
Audio conversation capabilities
Control of a Web camera or use of a video conferencing session
Application sharing
Creation of a white board space”
I’m a little confused. The download isn’t quite what I expected.
Greg Duncan says we’ll all learn more at PDC:
“MSN Messenger: Extending MSN Messenger with Multi-Person Instant Messaging Applications”
“This session covers the architecture and design of multi-person IM applications within MSN Messenger using the Messenger Activity API. We show how to use the peer-to-peer capabilities of the Activity API to build multi-user IM applications that can send files, instant messages, data, and integrate with other services. Build your IM applications to work with MSN Messenger, the world’s largest instant messaging service with more than 165 million customers worldwide.”
So many amazing and creative things can be done with a messaging framework. I hope this SDK is as good as I hope. If not, hopefully, with all the competition from Google, Yahoo, and Skype, we’ll continue to see more action here for developers. I’m looking forward to the PDC session.
