I’m upgrading my Samsung UMPC for CES. I want to use the device more this go round and so I ordered a 6-cell, extended battery and a carrying case with a mobile keyboard. I also picked up a power adapter for the car so I can keep the UMPC fully charged on the road trip to CES.
I’m still missing a key ingredient: I need a USB EVDO device. I currently use a PC Card with Verizon service. The Samsung Q1 UMPC only has a USB connector–not a PC Card slot. What I’d like to do is keep my same service, but add a USB EVDO device to my collection. I don’t know if Verizon allows this or provides a “second line” for a small fee. I know Verizon provides multiple family lines for $9 each. I hope something similar is available for EVDO. There’s no way I’m going to pick up a second line for $80. I’ll let you know what I find out. I’ll give Verizon a call first of the week.
Here’s the options you have:
* Buy a new USB modem at full price and switch your plan to it. Which will render the PC Card useless.
* Buy a USB modem and add a second line.
* Buy a EVDO router. There’s a list on evdoinfo.com and shows the compatibility for each router.
* Tether using your phone?
I bought a Novatel U727 USB EVDO modem and a Cradlepoint CTR350 EVDO router from evdoinfo.com not too long ago. Both are very small and works very well.

In purchasing my EV-DO, I was required to sign a two year agreement and get the second line. Hopefully Verizon has a different policy from Sprint. The UM150 looks good though.
