I don’t know if it was Don Dodge’s intention or not, but his post today outlines why Google is smart to compete for the 700MHz wirelesss spectrum. It’ll be game changing, if they win.
I’ve blogged before that I think Microsoft is missing the boat on this. In a Q&A session at CTIA, Steve Ballmer points out why Microsoft will pass. One of the reasons, according to press accounts is that Micrososft doesn’t want to compete with it’s wireless partners. Since when is coopetition is a non-starter?
What I’d like Microsoft to do is change the game even further than Google is thinking. I’d like to see the two companies (Google and Microsoft) work together on this. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Talk about a game-changing, game change.
The outcome could be phenomenal. Talk about a benefit to its “partners”–I mean OEM and software partners here! It would be huge. Yes, the wireless carriers would moan, but if you flip it around the other way, Microsoft’s customers and software partners are already moaning as it is.
Anyway, my fingers are crossed that at least Google will succeed.
