Measuring Learning

Linda Shear, et al. have released Measuring Learning: A guidebook for gathering and interpreting evidence through SRI International’s Center for Technology in Learning. It’s short and practical. OK, 41 pages may not seem short in the abstract, but review it for its utility.

As an instructor incorporating new technologies into your practice, you are bound to notice changes that occur, both in your classroom environment and in your students’ performance, attitudes, and behaviors. This guidebook is intended to help you decide what changes are important to notice and how to measure them.

Linda and the other authors ask for feedback from you. Please consider letting them know what’s useful and what they migh adjust to mae it more useful for you.

Thanks, Jim Vanides, for pointing to this release.

  1. Robert,You’re welcome! I think the SRI team did a great job trying to shrink decades of Learning Science research into a small but useful “brochure”.Anyone interested in practical assistance with measuring student outcomes may also appreciate the online resources and workshops provided by Gloria Rogers at ABET. With accreditation groups like ABET paying more attention to Student Outcomes, Dr. Rogers has assembled some wonderful resources that can help faculty with “assessment”.See http://www.abet.org/assessment.shtml for more information.Best regards,Jim Vanides
