Stephanie Moor, et al. (2007) report that teachers incorrectly identified fewer of the 69 students with depression after training than before training.
Before the training, the teachers correctly identified 52 per cent of the depressed pupils whereas afterwards they identified just 45 per cent – that is, they’d got worse!
Recognizing depressive illness in adolescence is one of the main public health challenges for adolescent mental health services and this study adds to the growing literature on the difficulties in achieving this.
