In case you’ve noticed, I’ve had to temporarily block all comments for now. I’ve been experiencing a spam flood that just won’t stop–hundreds and hundreds of spam comments continually posted. I’ve tried blocking IP addresses, but they simply jump to another. And so rather than spend more time deleting comments I’ve decided to block all comments for a couple days until the “spam attack” stops.

I usually get 10 to 20 spam posts a day which I delete. It’s not bad–just a pain. We have spam detection and blocking modules, but nothing seems to last for more than a few weeks.

We’ve been hit hard by spam posters once before. It was a similar assault with about a thousand spam posts. This time the posting seems to be more intense, so I’m going to try the block approach for a few days and hope they’ll eventually get bored and move on.

Interestingly, usually the spam posts increase as links come in from major news sites, such as MSNBC and the like. I haven’t checked, but I wonder if this blog has been picked up again. If so, welcome and sorry for the stale interaction. I hope to be back to opening the comments up in a few days.
