Curie’s Plight: Cancer and Old Age

We adopted Curie September 2009. She’s a calm dog who sits at your feet and loves to have her ears stroked. A few weeks ago, Curie lost the toenail in her back right foot. The vet thought there was an infection and we agreed to have her toe removed. Instead of healing, though, three weeks passed and her leg was swollen. She clearly was in pain and refused to walk on it. She also stopped climbing the stairs in the house.

Two different vets agreed that Curie had cancer and arthritis. Her age caught up with her.

I purchased tramadol and rimadyl for her and started giving her both pills yesterday afternoon. She takes tramadol three times a day and rimadyl twice each day.

Curie's Leg after taking medications

Curie slept upstairs last night. The first time in weeks. Today, the redness in her leg is gone, the swelling is not as bad, and she’s actually standing on the leg. She ate all of her breakfast and asked for a treat. She’s been outside to bark at the little dogs. She’s definitely feeling better.

We’ll try to make Curie as comfortable as possible and give her the best of life for her remaining time on earth (The vets say months). After all, our family lost Loren to cancer, AJ to old age, and the possibility of Curie leaving our family so soon is a bit much. We hope she stays around – and keeps finding her way to her comfortable beds scattered around the house.
