Not clearly an update issue at all. Indeed, not much is clear except that XP
w/SP3 and IE8 play very well together. Very well. The issue is local to your
stuff. Sorry.

I am a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher and have the opportunity to work
on a large number of machines ...I have mixed feelings about IE8 and XP

Though it works very well on about half the machines I've installed it
on...that means it works "less than" very well on the other half.

Had to uninstall it and use IE7.

It would not be a bad idea if you could state specifically which update
it was that caused the problem. The problem does indeed look like it was
caused by the update...but there is of course the possibility is
specific to your setup

And just how is this a useful FYI post since you omitted to mention either
the update number or the .dll file that got updated?

And what, pray tell, was the update(s) you uninstalled?

open for them.

One reason you are recieving such negative feedback to your post is the lack
of specific information, you specify an unknown security update and an
unknown DLL error.

Are you perhaps referring to KB972270?
"MS10-001: Vulnerability in the Embedded OpenType Font Engine could allow
remote code execution"

This update(that was released on Patch Tuesday) replaced the following two
system files in Windows XP SP3:

Font Subsetting DLL:
fontsub.dll
C:/WINDOWS\system32 \ fontsub.dll

Embedded OpenType Font Engine for Windows:
t2embed.dll
C:/WINDOWS\system32 \ t2embed.dll

So was it one of these two DLL files that your error message was
referencing?

FYI, I've installed this Update on 4 Windows XP SP3 machines without any
crashing of IE.

Is the Update still installed on your machine, or did you uninstall it?

Have you tried downloading and installing the Update manually?

Did you temporarily disable your real-time security application(s) before
trying to install this update?

Did you try Re-Registering the DLL file in question?

Answering some(all) of the above questions might turn your post into a more
positive experience for you, as well as help others in this group try to
help you.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell

Skeeter, are you or are you not interested in receiveing assistance?
Hint: being rude will make it less likely for this to happen.

Or maybe your intent was to warn us of a flaky update. If so, read on...

Apparently there were two high-priority updates for Windows XP this past
Tuesday:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB972270)
More info:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3f-7660-40be-b7d5-7b0eec55e1cd&displaylang=en

More info:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-001.mspx

and

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2010 (KB890830)

But we are not mindreaders. Many users wind up downloading *other*
updates, too. For instance, this past Tuesday there were also two
high-priority updates for Office 2003. There are always optional
software and hardware updates also that some people choose to download.

If you can isolate the issue you experienced to *one* update (for
instance, KB972270), that would have been useful information. Then
again, coincidence might have been at play, and it's possible the
behavior you experienced was not due to the update. Although I run XP
Home SP3, I use IE7, not IE8, so I cannot duplicate. Perhaps others can
chime in.

But calling people names (as you did in your response to VanguardLH) is
very immature. Furthermore, it wouldn't hurt to use your shift key!

It might seem that way to you, but millions upon millions are using XP, SP3
with IE8, and there are no problems like the ones you report.

I've been here for quite some time, my friend:

http://groups.google.com/groups/sea...ect=&as_uauthors=pabearmvp@gmail.com&safe=off

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/user/threads?user=PA Bear MS MVP

Did you install KB972270 and/or KB890830 and/or KB955759 and/or
KB976325...or...on 15 Jan-10?

What was the DLL file in the error?

Don't know anything about that update
but if your machine works now...I guess I'd not fret too much about it

LOL

/tongue in cheek remark coming/

Glad you were able to contact all of them...
thus far I've only been able to contact a handful.

Anyway , I've found that MS seems to customize their updates
in such a way that they generate unique problems for every individual.

No two problems alike.

/end of sarcasm/

Said as a joke of course...but some days it seems that way.

sheesh
