XP-SP3 How can I be sure to keep it.

I currently have a Dell Reinstallation CD for XP Pro - SP2. I recently had
to use it and was able to reinstall Windows without any problems. After
installation I used the Windows Update site to get all the current updates.
I believe I've read here that after July, 2010 SP2 will no longer be
supported. If I have use my OEM disk after July will I still be able to
download Service Pack 3 from Windows Update? or should I go ahead and
download the iso file from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E&displaylang=en
and copy it to a CD. I assume if I do this then I would be able to use the
copied iso file to update directly to SP3 without going thru the Windows
Update site - correct?

As long as you created a CD from the ISO and did not just copy the ISO file
to the CD. ;-)

BTW - it's not likely to disappear from the Internet anytime soon.

You can still get service packs for Windows 2000... You can get SP1a, SP2
and SP3 for Windows XP and SP1 and SP2 for Windows Vista. I would bet
(although I have not looked in a while) you can still download Windows NT
4.0 service packs.

Shenan,

I made an install disc from my retail XP SP2 disc and SP3 using nLite,
would the OP be able to do the same with the Dell re-installation CD?

Thanks,

get acronis True Image and make a clone of your disc using an external disc
drive
these days they are really affordable, keep your copy safe, and update
regularly

Do you mean slipstreaming SP3 into Windows OS setup CD from Dell? The answer
is no. I've tried it before and it failed. Slipstreaming works fine with a
retail CD.

Works fine with the Dell Windows XP CDs I have tried it with... From RTM,
SP1 and SP2 CDs with SP1, SP2 and SP3 (did all of them over time, no
problems.)

John, you are not the only one who has reported issues with attempting
to slipstream using a Dell-branded XP installation CD.

Did you try Nlite? There have been a number of success stories by people
who have used this program.

Also, the problematic Dell-specific files are listed here (as well as
workarounds) in the event you want to slipstream the regular way:

http://vbdotnet.home.comcast.net/~vbdotnet/XP_SP2.htm

Although these are old instructions for SP2, you can use them (with the
appropriate SP3 files) for integrating SP3.

That method worked for me. But I think Nlite would probably be easier
and quicker. :)

So, the answer is actually yes. However, it is not as straightforward as
when using a generic OEM or Retail XP installation CD.

Like he said, don't copy it to a CD. Create a CD from the .iso file.
Do you get the difference?

Why wait until after July? Do it now. At least download it now.
Maybe you won't have internet when you need this file.

See if this article helps you in any way:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp3_cd_final.htm

The above article is only good if you have actual Windows XP CD from DELL.
Ir doesn't matter whether it Gold version (or SP0), SP1 or SP2.

Let us know if it helped.

SP3 is supported through April 2014.

No I didn't use any 3rd party software. Instead I did the "update.exe
/integrate:<drive>:/<folder>" command to slipstream XP3, just like the
article at http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xpsp3_slipstream.asp

I decided to just apply SP3 after (re)installing XP SP2. Thanks for the
link. I'll have a look at it later.

It's been too long since I tried slipstreaming SP3 with Dell OS setup CD. I
got one of those green CD media from Dell that says:

OPERATING SYSTEM
ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
Reinstallation CD
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 2

I forgot what the problem was but IIRC when I did the "update ..." command,
it tells me that my WinXP SP2 is not the correct version.

Crap!!! I got it mixed up with another problem. Slipstreaming SP3 into WinXP
setup CD from Dell works just fine. I just double checked it. Yep it works.

The "other" problem that failed was when I tried to create a BartPE boot CD.
For some reason it refuses to use WinXP CD from Dell. It's either that or I
did not follow the instruction correctly.
