    Hi all,

I am having loads of problems with my XP installation an also internet
explorer and firefox programs. The system is very unstable and very slow and
I have already run antivirus and spam/spyware programs and they fin nothing.
both my internetnet explorer and fiefox are running very slowly and I think
this may have something to do with the add-on and I was wondering if i should
remove these and if so how do i do this?

Also , would it be possible for me to strip everything away and leave my
system only with the xp files needed to run XP. I bought this computer with
XP already installed and therefore do not have the setup disk. I just want to
remove all the junk and add-ons and see if that heals me.

Also , can I remove the files which windows updates use and if so where do I
    find these.

    Thanks a lot in advance.
    JC

IE and FF both install with shortcuts that will run them with no add
ons - look through your Start menu.

For Internet Explorer, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools...

For Firefox, Start, Programs, Mozilla Firefox...

You can run them manually with no add ons by clicking Start, Run and
in the box enter appropriate commands.

    "C:/Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

    "C:/Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

You should concentrate on overall system stability first, then fix the
browsers if they still need fixing.

Try eliminating unnecessary startup programs and see if the system becomes
    more stable, faster.

Go to START, RUN, type in MSCONFIG.
Check 'Selective Startup, Uncheck 'Load Startup Items' (then accept
    settings)

    REBOOT

If still no joy, open MSCONFIG
    check 'Diagnostic Startup', accept, reboot

If still no joy I'd need more details regarding what the PC is acting like

    Belprice, please answer Gerry's question:

Wow, it looks like you actually ran questionable software from an MVP
    Impostor. :-(

You need to do two things, first:

    1. Check to see if you have leaky capacitors.

    2. Check to see what method of reinstalling XP came with your Dell
Optiplex GX240. Perhaps you have a hidden restrore partition. The bottom
line is that if the motherboard's capacitors are okay, you really need
to start with a clean slate; this is a used PC!!! You no doubt still
have malware!!! So, since this is a second-hand PC, you need to wipe the
hard drive clean and start afresh.

    the easiest method to test
    system performance is to
    execute safe mode.

    if windows performs well in
    safe mode,

    then initiate a clean boot
    while in safe mode.

    then reboot into normal
    mode.

    incidentally you can use
    the method that "someone
    watching" provided to you.

the steps are for a "clean
    boot"

    ----------

    another possible problem that
    may affect system performance
is the lack of system tune up.

so my suggestion is to go here
    and initiate one:
