www.Wal-mart.com

W7 Home prem 32bit; IE8

Today when I tried to go to www.walmart.com.....the site that opened was
www.mobile.walmart.com. I have www.walmart.com added in my Compatibility
View settings....because a month ago when going to the WalMart site I would
get a Download Window and the fix was to open another Walmart site (ie a
dept) and than ADD that site to the Compatibilty View setting. Afgter I did
that I was going directly to the Wal-mart Home.....but now I am going to the
mobile.walmart.com site.

Suggestions?

You have something in your User-Agent string which can be misinterpreted
by sloppy parsing. Try using the UAPick add-on to simplify your UA string
for that site.

Good luck

He was implying you should install this:
http://www.ieaddons.com/en/details/other/UAPick_UserAgent_Switcher/

However, I'd suggest not doing that right away. Go to
http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ and copy and paste the red string you see near
the top of that page into a reply here. That way we can see what IE is using
for it's user agent string - this is how sites identify what the browser is
and what options are enabled.

As Robert stated in his reply, there's likely something in the user agent
that the Walmart site thinks means it's a mobile browser. For instance, on
Feb 7 someone else posted about their IE8 being treated as a mobile browser,
and it was noted that he had Creative AutoUpdate listed in his user agent
string and the letters "pda" were being interpreted by the site as meaning
it was a pda device so was displaying the mobile version of the site. It's
sloppy coding on the part of the site, but to work around it you will need
to remove the identifying string from your user agent but also make sure
it's valid, so if you post your current user agent string in a reply here we
can tell you what to change it to using the UAPick tool from the link above.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Here is your problem.
You have installed the Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01 package and the
website thinks you have a pda because that occurs in the text.

You can probably uninstall that package. But I don't know if
the uninstall will neatly remove the text from the user-agent
string. It could be you have to do that manually.

I do recall right after W7 strated following an In-Place repair that I saw a
window open that read Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01 installed.....I didn't
have a choice.....it did so automatically and the message was an after the
fact message. I do see Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01 in the programs &
feature list.

However it is mentioned deleting this may not correct the issue (so I have
not deleted it), and, since it installed automatically back on 3/4/10 (right
after I started W7 for the 1st time after In-Place Repair was run)....it most
likely will install automatically again.

I wouldn't have a clue how to manually remove the text from the User-agent
string.

What causes this to happen? Surely this Creative Updater was installed with
my Previous W7\IE8 Install.........

Odd. The link is fine, as you proved by copy-and-paste. Sounds like your
news reader messed up the link ...

As Rob has pointed out, and I'd already assumed would be the case, Creative
AutoUpdate is causing this. If you don't want to remove the software, use
the UAPick software to change the string to

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET
CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0;
Media Center PC 5.0; MS-RTC LM 8; SLCC1;)

You could also maybe make it a little shorter, long UA strings can cause
problems with some sites. Just make sure you retain the closing parentheses,
and that you keep a single semi-colon between each entry inside the
parentheses. Also make sure you keep it to at least the following:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0;)

as this identifies the browser as IE8, your version of Windows as Windows 7
(it's actually version 6.1!), and that it uses the Trident 4 layout engine
and is used to identify IE8 in IE7 Compatibility Mode.

You guys are good...and quick. Why wouldn't this impact all sites I go
to....why just the Walmart Site?

I wonder if I delete the Creative Updater from P&F if it will resolve the
Issue?

I do see Creative Updater in my Msconfig Startup lists; I wonder if I should
uncheck it?

Also, I do wonder why after W7 started following my Upgrade\Repair...why
this Creative Updater was automatically installed....what triggered it and
why I was given a Choice.

Because not all sites look for the 3 letters "pda" in the UA string and
redirect to a different site if they find them. None of the sites I've built
do so, and if I did set up a site with mobile specific content I'd certainly
not base the entire thing on looking for a string of 3 letters that might
crop up inside a longer word ...

Doubt it.

Leave it running. Use the UAPick tool to just remove it from the UA string,
and all will be well.

No idea - you must have something installed that uses it, soundcard drivers
perhaps? I certainly don't have it on my Windows 7 based PC at home, but I'm
using an nVidia based board with Realtek audio and no Creative software at
all.

When I went to the UAPick User-Agent Site (it appears to be a Microsoft
site)... there is a link that reads "Add to Interent Explorer". There does
not appear to be any add'l information....such as, what will take place? How
to use this utility? Surely I would have thought Microsoft would have
provided instructions as to how to use this switcher.

As you probably gathered, I have limited computer knowledge....

When I click on the UAPick_UserAgent_Switcher....does it download a file
that you can save to your desktop and then Install the add-on?

Does the add-on Install like any other software, that is, it creates a entry
in ALL PROGRAMS to start it running?

When UAPick starts it goes out and finds the User-Agent String and loads it
into the software....as I would have no idea where to find it on my PC?

I would then, to make it simple for me just delete the Creative
AutoUpdater...I am guessing the UAPick was an editior feature that allows you
to delete as much as you want out of the string and then save it in its new
form????? How do you edit it with this add-on?

Lastly, like any other software, it has its own Uninstaller, or, you can
Uninstall it using W7 Program & features. I always like to know anything I
install on my PC can be removed.

From an educational standpoint, why would Creative Auto Updater be added to
the User-Agent String? This sting just keeps getting longer as you download
certain types of software??? so it can get quite long? Or was this jsut
some sort of an error, that is, Creative AutoUpdater getting added to the
string?

Thanks for being patient with me and....teaching me.

Hi Denmarfl,

Just uninstall Creative AutoUpdater (do not delete it) and be done with
it....
If after you uninstall it, and reboot your computer, the string is still in
your UserAgent string then contact the web site and ask for a fix.
Actually, try unchecking the entry in your startup list in msconfig and then
restart your computer and retest your UserAgent string to see if it has
removed it.

The last time I saw a Creative product was at least 5 years ago for a sound
card... I doubt that what you have is even compatible with a Win7 machine as
hardware firmware updates are controlled from the MS Updates, not the
vendors websites.

The real fault for your issues lies with the Programmers of the Walmart
site... UserAgent sniffing is not the standard way of detecting mobile
device web browsers.

Walmart probably outsource their web site resources, so complaining to them
would probably be fruitless also...

UAPick_UserAgent_Switcher is a programmers tool that in the wrong hands may
cause excessive confusion and frustration.

Regards.

Unchecked Creative AutoUpdater....in my MsConfig\Startup...re-started
computer.....that did not remove Creative AutoUpdater from the User-Agent
String. I believe it was Dan's reply that read deleting Unchecking or
deleting Creative AutoUpdater would not remove it from the User-Agent String.

Surely if not the UAPick Tool, there must be a way to Delete Creative
AutoUpdater....from from User-Agent String. I am willing to use the Tool if
I knew more about how it works....which is why I asked all those questions in
my last reply. With the right knowledge, I know I can use the tool, or for
that matter any other tool...or process....and get Creative AutoUpdater..off
my User-Agent String

All you've done is stopped it from starting - as Rob said you need to
uninstall it, not just disable it. Uninstalling it probably will remove it,
but there's no guarantee.

Editing the UA string is not a simple matter - the UA pick too is one of the
easy options. There's a link on the link I gave you that goes here:

http://www.enhanceie.com/ietoys/uapick.asp

with easy to follow steps on how to use the UAPick too to change the UA
string. There really isn't anything more to it - you either pick a
pre-defined string, enter your own edited one, or switch it back to the
default. The plugin does all the work of modifying the appropriate registry
entries.

If you're sure you don't need Creative Updater, just uninstall it. There's
no point having applications running if they're not being used for anything.
But something must have installed that application, it doesn't come with
Windows by default and I've never seen it on any system I've had to support
yet.

Dan; Thanks for coming back in on this....as you can gather, I am not well
schooled in this area so I must proceed carefully so as not to create other
issues.

I certainly am not capable of entering\creating a String.....so are you
saying a choice will be offered to set it back to IE\W7 Default String?

The Tool will let me to just remove the Creative Updater....?

Of these two, which is the best?

Are you saying to download the Tool\add-on....or use the...which would seem
to be a little careless since you would have no control over what is taking
place......

"Install UAPick (114kb)

Hint: Want a silent / unattended install? Use the command line:
UAPickSetup.exe /S"

When I click on the UAPick_UserAgent_Switcher....does it download a
file that you can save to your desktop and then Install the add-on?

Thanks for being patient with me and....teaching me...I realize I am asking
a lot of questions and taking up a lot of your time.....but it is very much
appreciated. I want to do it ...right the first time.

I've already in an earlier told you exactly what you need to enter as the
new string. You just need to type it in the box.

No, the to remove Creative Updater go to Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel and uninstall it. Do you not know how to uninstall an application?

Stop. Uninstall the Creative Updater application, don't go near UAPick. I'm
sorry, but your replies are making it very clear you should not be touching
anything that can change settings on your computer.

I can't go on trying to help you, sorry. I would suggest that you talk to
someone who can help you with this in person. If you continue to try to
understand things, and it's clear that you haven't understood anything any
of us have replied to you with, then you risk messing up settings and
rendering your browser, and possibly more, unusable.

After installing the UA picker open the "Tools" menu in Internet Explorer.
(Click the "Tools" button or hit [Alt] then "T".) There will be an option "Set
UA String", click on that. Your User Agent will be displayed, you can then
highlight "Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01" and hit delete and "Save" or you can
select from a dropdown list of preset UA strings. Select the one that matches
your IE version and O/S.

Some software and Microsoft Updates can change the UA string so it's a good idea
to periodically check and repeat your selection if it has been modified. If you
don't remove the Creative Updater software from your system it will probably add
itself back the the UA string.

The UA picker can be un-installed through Add/Remove Programs, it is listed
there as "Bayden UAPick".

WOW...you guys are coming down hard on me......I didn't intend to get anyone
"ticked" at me.

I went in and UnChecked Creative AutoUpdater in Msconfig\Startup.....that
didn't correct the issue.

I than went into P&F and Uninstalled Creative AutoUpdaterv1.40....and that
resolved the issue. My User-Agent String no longer contains the Creative
AutoUpdater text. I did call Creative and they were at a total loss as to
what the User-Agent String was.....but did say that the Creative AutoUpdater
is automatically installed with the Driver. I am gusessing as Windows 7 was
re-starting for the 1st time after the In-Place Upgrade.....this Updater was
installed becaused Windows during the Upgrade installed a newer driver for my
Soundcard. Creative said to delete the Updater form P&F and that the Updater
would not be offered again\installed, it is only installed along with the
Install of its driver. if need be I can check for Creative Updates manually
at their site.

I am thinking the Windows Update will check for any updates needed for my
Creative sound card........

Thanks to both Dan and PA Bear......even though I didn't use the UAPICK
tool, I have certainly learned some new stuff.........
