WMP 11 on winXP - can't play mp3, wav or .asx

I'm not sure what's caused this but WMP 11.0.5721.5268 is not behaving
itself. When I try to play any mp3s I get the error,
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
All of these files used to play fine and they still play ok in other
players. When I try to play a .wav, wmp crashes and closes and when I try to
play something contained within an .asx, I get stuck at "opening media".

Clearly, something has gone badly wrong but I don't know what or why. From
reading arund everything I can find on the web about this issue, I have
several things in common with others who have experienced this problem.
1. My soundcard which is an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro (drivers up to date)
2. Itunes is also installed
3. Kaspersky Intenet Security 2010 is installed.

Of these, my soundcard seems most likely. Can anybody offer any advice as to
where to go from here?

You could use System Restore to roll back to a restore point that was
taken before this started happening.

If that's not an option or doesn't help, the next thing I would suggest
would be to try reinstalling WMP.

Hi Tim

I am having the same problem and tried the sysytem restore and reinstalling
and these did not work.

The error message directs me MS site, which gave me a "error message
C00D11B1"

What are my options.

Is this WMP 11 on XP as well? Do you get this error message on all MP3s,
or only some specific ones? Are other file types, such as WMA and WAV,
affected as well?

Upgrading the DRM components might help: close all web browsers and WMP.
Open a single IE window and go to
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp
