Wlon't log on from log on welcome screen

Win XP will not go further than the Log on welcome screen. There is a flash
of background then it logs off immediately and goes back to the welcome log
on screen.

Does exactly the same in safe mode. Please assist.

Your machine is probable the victim of some malware which has tampered with
the file userinit.exe. Type the following words into a Google search box,
then check out the most prominent links:

windows logon userinit.exe
