I have a laptop running Windows XP and I use a different program to handle
my wireless connection than the one included with Windows. I have a signal
to connect to the internet on my program, nonetheless still cannot connect
to the internet.

Then, contact support of the "mystery" program you do use.

Did you sucessfully join the wi-fi network? Is this a secured wi-fi or open?

Are you able to ping a domain name? eg: ping google.com
