WindowsXP/Windows 7 File Sharing

I am considering upgrading my desktop computer. I may get one that has
Windows 7 Professional instead of Windows XP Professional. But before I
consider this further, I need to know a few things...

1. I currently have my files shared between my desktop (ZM001) and laptop
(ZM002), both of which operate on Windows XP Professional. All the files are
housed on ZM001 and simply set to being available offline on ZM002. In fact,
ZM002 has the "My Documents" folder set to being the "My Documents" folder on
ZM001 (C:/Documents and Settings\... on ZM002). Any change (or addition)
made to the documents on either computer are able to easily be synchronized
at every connection and disconnection that ZM002 has with the network. Since
the user name and password are the same on both computers, I am also able to
establish privacy setting so that only I can have access to these files over
the network. So, here's the question: If I update ZM001 to being a Windows 7
Professional computer, but leave ZM002 as a Windows XP Professional computer,
can this same set-up be established/maintained across the different OS's?

2. Can print sharing sharing and remote desktop connectivity occur across
these different operating systems?

3. I desire to continue to use most of the software I purchased pre-Windows
7 Professional days, including Microsoft Office 2003, Adobe Creative Suite 3,
and others. Will I be able to use most of this software on Windows 7
Professional?

4. Some of my data files, such as my .pst files (Outlook files), are of the
utmost importance to keep available and continued use of. Will I be able to
do this if I update to Windows 7 Professional? What if I elected to make use
of a later version of the Microsoft Office suite (Is a 2003 version a .pst
file compatible in later versions or able to be easily converted)?

Careful! I switched three computers from XP to Windows 7 and ran them
for a year and I couldn't take it anymore and I switched them back to
Windows XP. As I had lots of driver and application issues.

Compatibility info - you can type in programs names, to check in advance.
For example, CS3 is OK, either 32 bit or 64 bit.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/

Or try this Upgrade Advisor - I just ran this, and it has a section, warning
about programs you can expect trouble from. One example of a complaint,
is the version of Google Earth I'm currently using (I only upgrade when forced).

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

Good email tools, will offer to import the database from another tool.
You'd have to verify that in advance. For example, the open source
Thunderbird program, has round about ways to do importing. You need
to research this, for whatever tool you choose. The answers aren't always
easy to find.
