Start, Run, enter "msconfig" (no quotation marks) in the Run box to open the
System Configuration Utility. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck all of the
boxes and reboot the machine. Does it run faster now? If so, one or more of
your startup applications is slowing the machine down. Reopen the utility,
check the boxes one at a time and reboot the machine until you find the
applications that are slowing the machine down. Then you decide if the
offending applications are worth the performance hit. Uninstall those that
you don't want from Add/Remove Programs. Google if you don't know what
application the entry refers to.

1. How much RAM does the system have ? *Right* click My Computer either
on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose Properties. The info is towards
the bottom of the windows.

2. Has the system been opted in to Microsoft Update ? Click Start and if
it's not listed in the first column click (All) Programs. If the system
is opted into MU it will show on the second column towards the top.

you can always boot up
in safe mode and see
if performance is better.

if so, then you have
eliminated 50% of the
steps.

Get a Mac.

If you can't afford it or are too lazy to switch to a decent OS reformat
and reinstall every six months.

Justin this is crap advice. If you don't know how to help the poster, don't answer.
Telling him to buy a Rolls-Royce Car because his Chevy is broken is no help at all.
Go back to the Apple boards and help there.

Ted S could tell us:

-- what computer? (make, model, CPU, amount of virtual
memory, swap file size, etc)

-- under what circumstances? (all the time? does rebooting
help, at least for a while?)

-- any info on CPU usage? (just get into Windows Task Manager,
open the Processes tab, look under CPU and tell us any
non-trivial numbers in the CPU column, plus what the CPU
Usage (at the bottom) is) -- (then open the Performance tab
and tell us all the numbers whether he understands them or
not)

-- what anti-virus program? (hopefully only one)

-- when did it start? (any new software installed about then?)

-- what software is used?

-- and another of the journalist's 5 W's, who? (meaning, who has
done anything with his machine, such as helpful [possible]
experts, or his kids)

That should get us off to something of a start.

please check your computer for spyware.

download:

1. spybot search and destrory
2. malwarebytes antimalware
3. super antispyware.

these can be downloaded for free and easily from download.com

with spybot when installing uncheck "use tea timer".

I would tell you to do exactly what I do, if I find my PC slowing to a
crawl all of a sudden - start the Windows Task Manager (right-click on an
empty area of the Window's Taskbar and choose "Task Manager").

Then click on the "Processes" tab, then click on the "memory usage" column
header to get the items in order - largest down to smallest - so that you
can see at a glance which applications are doing all the unusual hogging of
system resources.

Once you are armed with this information you will be in a much better
position to act or at least look up the effects of the offending
application on the internet.

I would ask you to post your answers here after consulting the Task
Manager.
