Hello, I'm trying to re-install windows xp on my machine. I am able to get it to boot from the cd, but when I get to the screen that says 'Press any key...' I press keys on the keyboard but it doesn't recognize that i'm pressing anything and starts windows normally. Any work arounds or solutions?

Thanks!
Katy

Buy or borrow a PS/2 keyboard, or go into the BIOS and enable "USB
Legacy Support", so the keystrokes will be seen.

That is what I have to do on my mobo. What I can't understand is why
this is a BIOS option at all? Why would anyone not want this enabled
when PS/2 are fast being obsolete?

Because the BIOS was designed/programmed before "PS/2 were fast being
obsolete!"

I can't help but wonder........What is the benefit of this not being
enabled?

Most motherboards being sold today do have at least a PS/2 keyboard
connector and for a "wired" keyboard, I would always prefer PS/2 over USB
because the keyboard is seen from start by the system.

There are no advantages using a USB wired keyboard over a PS/2 keyboard.

Why all manufacturers want everything to be USB is a mystery to me...

As far as PS/2 keyboards are concerned, "Why fix it when it's not broken?"

USB Legacy Support

USB Port 64/60 Emulation

As far as I know, it is some way for USB keyboard messages, to be stored
in such a way, as to appear they're coming in on the PS/2 interface. Then,
an older OS thinks a PS/2 keyboard is creating those keycodes.

There are cases, of software which is not compatible with leaving
those enabled. I think an older version of one of the memtest
programs had a problem if that was left enabled. So there
can be reasons why a user would need to (temporarily) disable
the function.
