Windows Security Essentials won't install

I am in deep doo-doo. I successfully installed Windows Security Essentials
on my 32 bit laptop and 64 bit desktop, both running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I liked its performance so much I recommended it to my brother, who is
running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on his laptop. He could not get Essentials
to install completely, his computer kept locking up, requiring restarts.
Still could not get rid of Essentials files and folders. He is threatening
to disown me and to buy an Apple computer.

Any notions what might have gone wrong?
