Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

One of my machines has a problem with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on XP
SP2:

If a .TIF file is double clicked, the Fax Viewer opens the file, but takes
very long. When the print option is selected, it starts listing (I think) all
the files on the disk: 13690 files in this case. It takes about 30 minutes
(Core2Duo 1..

I do not find any options in WPFV to set any defaults. Possibly, some other
application is being called to print the viewed file.

I changed the default for .tif to PhotoEditor: but is there is any way I can
use WPFV to print: It has some useful layout options.

I don't use WPFV much but know one way to surely make it run slow.

I "think" when it launches it tries to figure out some kind of index
to all the picture files so you can click through them etc. It looks
at the entire folder where the picture is opened for images (I think).

If there is a link or shortcut in the folder to a picture that does no
longer exists (sometimes referred to as a dead link), it will take a
long time to open.

I have one folder with 100 pictures and 50 links to pictures in
another folder, WPFV opens quickly.

I go to the other folder where the 50 linked to pictures are and
delete/rename the picture so now the link in the original folder is
broken since the picture is gone.

Back in my original folder with 100 pictures, 49 good links and now
one broken link WPFV takes a l-o-n-g time to open with the hourglass.
If I replace the deleted picture so all 50 links are whole again, WPFV
is very good again. It takes a long time for it to figure out the
broken link. I don't know if it is looking all over the HDD or what.

But what do you want for a built in program that is old and free. I
imagine it can probably get worse with more dead links, disconnected
network drives, etc.

Some folks find IrfanView a more pleasant experience and I don't feel
like downloading it to try it since I don't do any picture stuff, but
I do know how to make WPFV take a long time - let it encounter a dead
link in the folder where your pictures are.

In my case, WPFV would work if called by doubleclicking any TIF /pict file.
But if an attachment in a OE message was a TIF/Pict, it would take ages.

The user did not tell me this! The attachment saved anywhere would work fine.

When OE displays an attachment, it first extracts it to IE Temporary Files,
and opens it from there. And when asked to print, it first displays all that
it can print in that folder. Temporary Internet files had never been cleared,
and had 13690 files that were displayable!!

Holy cow. That's good detective work.

It is good when things makes some sense.
