windows 7 upgrade

I bounght an acer laptop from Comet on 18th november and have not yet
received the promised upgrade disk for windows 7. I know it can work on
vista but shall not use it until I get windows 7. Am trying all I can to
get the disk but so far no progress.
I have a genuine Microsoft Windows 7 home premium with the seal unbroken and
wonder if I could install that.
There is a note refering to the "OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) and I wonder
if I would need that before I could do anything. This disk came with a sony
laptop I bought but did not use and returned to the sony shop - they gave me
a replacement with windows 7 preinstalled - now with my son.
Does anyone know if this Windows 7 disk would work on the acer laptop?
Thank you

I've seen them listed on ebay with laptop manufacturers names on them and
the listings say they'll work on any laptop. Since yours has the OPK then
I'm not sure, that may be installed on the CD/DVD by Sony so it is actually
for a specific machine, like a restoration disk.
If it does work, when or if you do get the Upgrade disk, if it's a MS
upgrade disk and you want to sell it, I'm interested.

Dave, I have sent a recorded delivery letter to Comet giving them 14 days to
supply the upgrade disk otherwise I am referring it to the Trading Standards
Authority and seeking my money back. They have a wek or so yet so will wait
and see if the upgrade comes.

If MS would continue security support for XP I wouldn't even consider W7.
So far it's been a PITA to deploy...lots of problems in networking and legacy
problems.

Seems like another case of change for change's sake.

I haven't had a BSOD, lockup, or other problem for years with XP

Weird, I looked through the list of countries twice, second time one by one,
and didn't see U.S. or anything applicable.
Anyway, as near as I can tell it costs appx $30 USD for the upgrade.

The upgrade disk is suposedly supplied by a comany called mentormedia - they
are agents for Microsoft. They accepted my payment for the upgrade on 25th
november and supposedly despatched the upgrade disk on 9th december - still
not here. My contract for the laptop was with comet and while they try to
pass the responsibility on to mentormedia they were advertising and selling
the laptop with the upgrade. i have to wait and see.
If no joy then I shall try the OEM system pack that I have.

Windows 7 is supposed to be much more secure than Windows XP. Vista and
Windows 7 users have substantially lower malware infection rates than
Windows XP users.

As for the rest of Windows 7 - well, it's still Windows NT at heart - even
though it has the best Taskbar.

)
