Not an offical Microsoft-sponsored one. They do have a web forum, but I
don't know the address.

There is an unoffical one called "alt.windows7.general". It is not
carried by all usenet services (Google doesn't have it.)

There is an "alt.windows7.general" news group in the free "news.aioe.org" service.
But it had degenerated into a flame war between Linux and windows users.

Thanks PA.
I'm really trying to find out what programs will run and how to set up
windows 7 for the wife. Buying her a new laptop and everything we have now
is running great on WinXP but it appears all the Dell's are running Win7.
We/she currently uses Office 2k(word and excel only) and OLE.
Yep, we're wayyyyyy out-dated but everything works and does what we need.

Not really. I see none of that. It's very easy to filter that stuff
out, which leaves you with a good amount of interesting content.

I have found that most things that run in XP run well in Win7 also. I have
Office 2003 on mine which runs just fine, no problems that are Win7 related.
I have some older utilities and games that were ME/2k/XP compatible that
also run fine on Win7. Unless you have some REALLY old programs, you
shouldn't have any insurmountable problems making them run on Win7. You
could try a search for Windows 7 and whatever programs you're concerned
about and see what results other people are having.

alt.windows7.general is hijacked by a bunch of lunatics and all
you get is words that cannot be repeated here due to censorship by
Micro$! A novice is not advised to go there.

Many users just use the Windows Vista news groups and prefix their
questions with "Windows 7"
Windows Vista and Windows 7 are not identical, but have a decent amount
of communalities.

Some people will tell you, that this is an abuse of the Vista groups,
others will tell you, that this is the way to go. as
Microsoft does not provide a news group.

Up to you to decide.

You think there are no lunatics here???? alt.windows.7 isn't "hi-
jacked" by anyone that's not in the other windows newsgroups. There are
some knowledgeable people there, if you look for them

Microsoft can do nothing about what I see there. And I filter out 90%
of the nonsense, so I don't see that, either. Whats left is some
reasonably good discussion and information. I guess sensitive novices
might be better off to stay away, but anyone who knows how to navigate
a newsgroups should be fine.

The only lunatics here are people calling themselves as MVPs and
so they are pretty easy to filter them out. Otherwise there are
people like you who I won't call lunatics but real professionals
with demonstrable working experience.

On that group almost every other person (in fact 4 people out of
5) is having a go at someone. Mind you I still go there to see if
anything has changed but I try to stay away from the stampede of
their wonderful tool called Ubuntu!

And yet you post there also. You shouldn't lump everyone together like that.
:)

I totally agree, though. There are a number of them that get more caught up
in their petty bickering than actually tring to help someone out of a jam.
Killfiles and news rules work wonders!

Yeah, its easier to filter out the garbage on the newsgroup than on the
Microsoft Windows 7 forum, too much noise and not enough useful content
on the forums. 100s of posts a day and most of them the same noobs
refusing the read other posts first with the same exact problem.

That is incorrect. But I guess Microsoft likes it better that way if
people forget newsgroups exist so they can shut these newsgroups down.
