Why is XP VPN client limited to 28kbs?

I'm on a broadband link with a 1mbs upload speed, but I can't get faster
that 28kbs. How do I increase the link speed?

Have you contacted your broadband provider? That would probably be a good
first step.

and throttles up...
Does it?
if not try setting the MTU on the receiving end to 1400 or 1300
if still no
please post back with router(s) models network details

provider supplies 1mb upload speed to client, 6 mbs download. Server
provides 10 mbs down, 1 mbs up. The peoblem is with the client, I believe.

When I did some work at home with a VPN tunnel (third party software),
they blamed bad performance on a mismatch between the MTU of the VPN tunnel,
versus the MTU of the computer. The resulting packet fragmentation
was supposed to be what was reducing my file sharing speed to
4KB/sec. I was too busy at the time, to fix it. It is pretty funny
to be using ADSL, and see dialup performance :) Fortunately, other
protocols were more tolerant of the mess, so the VPN wasn't a total
loss. I could still get some work done.

Other point, check the port you are using (at the server end) isn't being
affected by traffic-shaping measures at the client ISP. If it is, use of a
different port may be a solution.

MTU is set at receiving end to 1493.

Current Server: 2003 server
Router is 2wire, 2701HG-B Gateway
8 Ethernet, 0 Wireless, 100 BaseT

Alternate vpn authenticator is Window XP Pro, used for testing

It doesn't matter which server/alternate used, connncection is 28kbs.

I have access to other corporate networks, using Linksys/Cisco, SMC, and
Efficient Networks routers, with same results. Problem occurs using XP
wkstations on LANs using 2Wire, Linksys, and on wkstations using Verizon 3G
USSB769 device, too.

I'm convinced the issue relates to the default configuration of the XP
client.
