Hi Richard,
google.ca is one of a few google sites that are experimenting with new
technologies (web standards, html 5, DOM storage). Also try google.com
(unchanged) and google.com.au (new format), although you may not be able to
access those sites from Canada.
From what I have seen, their 'experiments' have some flaws, and are still
undergoing development and the rendering of your google.ca results pages may
also depend upon what other google software you have installed on your
computer, so other browsers like Opera are not affected.
Here is my IE configuration that resolves some of the issues.... I can view
google.ca results pages without issues, although in the past or when I
enable the google toolbar or google gears, I can reproduce the issue.
First up, disable third-party browser extensions (this includes the Google
toolbar, Google gears and Google chrome frame) by the Internet Options,
Advanced tab, uncheck "enable third-party browser extensions"
Next on the Security tab of Internet Options, click the "Reset all zones to
default" button,
Next select the Trusted Sites zone and press the Sites button,
Inspect your trusted sites zone,
1. If you have
http://www.google.com listed change it to *.google.com
otherwise just add *.google.com
2. If you have
http://www.youtube.com listed change it to *.youtube.com
otherwise just add *.youtube.com
Save your changes to Internet Options and return to your IE Window. On the
Tools>Compatibility View Settings menu check that you do not have google.ca
in your Compatibility View list.
Close ALL open IE windows.
I don't think your userAgent string is faulty. The test page at
enhanceie.com will report what is send to it from your browser and when
using IE8 in compatibility view it is expected to see the IE7 userAgent
string.
Try google.ca again.... I think you may be able to get it to work as
expected from there on... Sorry... it is a bit complicated, but as I
explained, Google is experimenting on some sites (they have their own
browser now and are in perhaps direct competition to MS). I expect in time
they will get all the issues ironed out.
When you load google.ca, press the F12 key to display the Developer tool,
there you will see the Browser Mode displayed. If it still says IE7
Emulation mode, select IE8 Standards (default) which is what they(google)
have changed it to.
If I was you I would just leave things as they are, viz leave your
third-party browser extensions enabled, but definitely if you are using
google online services like GMail and igoogle add the two sites *.google.com
and *.youtube.com to your trusted sites zone and ensure you have the default
security zone settings for all zones.
Regards.
