Why are my pictures duplicating themselves?

When I have scanned images using Picture Manager, I am unable to save
corrections because it comes up as 'file already in use'.
When I search to find these extra files I have found that each picture has 2
duplications (clones) which have been created simultaneously.
This is happening on 2 different scanners.
What is happening, and how do I stop it?
