Now that Outlook Express is not included in Windows 7, what other
news-client is available (preferably free) that most closely resemble it in
functionality and appearance?
Is Windows Live Mail a close substitute?
Regards and TIA.

I use Windows Live Mail. I find it very similar in looks and operation. It
has mail and news combined, and spam/blocked sender rules are very similar
in their construction.
There are a number of other free mail, news, and combination mail/news
clients out there. You'll receive a lot of recommendations from others as
well- try a few (or a lot) of them and pick the client(s) with which you
feel most comfortable.

Take your pick. I use Pan. It's purty.

I didn't like Live Mail very much and opted for Thunderbird 2 as more
closely resembling OE, functionally. Another feature that I really like
is that it is available in a portable version.

I personally prefer version 2 to the later version 3:

Thanks very much for the quick and informative responses.
I will try out both Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird - will retain one.
Regards and thanks again.

It hasn't been included in the last two versions of Windows--neither
Windows Vista nor Windows 7.

I tried Windows Live Mail as a newsreader and didn't like it. I use
FortÊ Agent 6.0, and like it the best of all the newsreaders I've
tried. It isn't expensive, but it's not free.

There are several other free ones you can download and try. My
recommendation is that you should try several and choose what *you*
like best, rather than make your decision based on what I, or anyone
else, likes best.

Thunderbird here too.
Plus I am here while running Ubuntu. I do have XP and 7 installed since
my hardware is only supported up to the XP level.
If I jump into a news group I may be in either system. I still have DOS
and it screams, in there along with Windows 3.1.
I have just made Thunderbird my browser of choice in all 3 possible boot
up scenarios, along with Open Office, which does run on XP or 7 and yes
it runs on Linux. Free, too.

Thanks for your response.
Your suggestion odes make sense to me - I do appreciate it.
Actually, I didn't have much ideas of newsreaders apart from OE (been using
it since I don't remember!).
I kinda miss it, really.

I use Thunderbird as it works with my IMAP servers, ISPs POP3 servers,
google and others. As well as news of course. Even has plugins for PGP.

One stop easy to use mail and news reader. Works equally as well on
Linux, Mac, XP, W2003, Vista, Win7 and others.
