Upgrade to Pro, or install 32 bit version

J

My present box was purchased in October of last year. It came with Win 7
Home edition, 64 bit version. My favorite CAD program (AutoCad LT) will not
run in the 64 bit version. Recently, I upgraded our laptop from VISTA to Win
7, 32 bit version. The CAD programs works perfectly in that environment. I
have an extensive set of drawings (woodwork, cabinets etc) that I would like
to have available for future work.

I would like to run CAD on my present machine and it appears I have two
choices (maybe).

First: Purchase upgrade to Win PRO, and then install "XP mode" and "Virtual
PC". Would this add extensive baggage to the existing operating system, or
am I being too cautious?

Second: My existing machine did not come with a DVD for the operating
system, so I would have to purchase a new Win 7 set of discs (they come
with 32 and 64 bit DVD's), then install the 32 bit version. Would this
demand a complete removal of the 64 bit version? Is this a practical method.
?

....did it install and then refuse to run? Usually, 32 bit will run under
64 bit but not 64 under 32.

No "virtual" OS will run apps as fast as doing a "regular" install
directly to the main OS.

Yes, a complete removal and a clean install.

Is this a practical

I still don't know why your AutoCad LT won't run on W 7/64.
Are you changing the default install location by chance?

I was incorrect about the program's name.....should be AUTOSKETCH.

Autosketch was installed on the laptop prior to upgrading to WIN 7, 32 bit
from VISTA. The program runs smoothly. Installation was NOT required.

The Autosketch refuses to install on my system which has the 64 bit version
of Win 7 installed. I get a message which states that I have the
incompatible version of the OS. Apparently the program cannot run under a 64
bit environment. This is an OLD program that I would like to continue using
because of the large amount of drawings that will not transfer to new CAD
programs.

Thanks for your inputs. I still need to decide whether to upgrade to PRO, or
simply start from scratch and install a 32 bit version of Win 7.

What about installing Virtual PC2007 to your new system, and installing Win

Just how old is the AutoSketch? (I just installed AS9 on 64 bit 7) 16
bit apps or installer won't install on 64 bit 7.

Autosketch is circa 1999-2000. You are correct, it IS a 16 bit app. Maybe I
should simply retire the old lady.

Could upgrade versions of AutoSketch probably cheaper than upgrading Win
7 to support it. Unless of course you have more 16 bit programs you need
to run.
