Upgrade from XP to 7

I read an archived post on the site that said you could upgrade your previous
versions of Windows if you have the Product Key for the version you have. Is
this true? I would like to upgrade from XP to 7, but I have never done
anything like that before.

If you have the media...

There is no direct upgrade path from WIndows XP to Windows 7 - it's a clean
installation. You will need the installation media for all your products
and good backups to be safe.

If you haven't done it before, then don't try it because it will take you ages to
do it and your system/computer may not be up to standard. You will be better off
buying a completely new system to satisfy your curiosity of Windows 7. Let me
tell you, it is not something you will be proud of!

Also, please note that you will need to buy a package of Windows 7 and it will
come with its own product key. You can't use Windows XP or Windows Vista's
product key with it.

If all you have is a [stolen/borrowed/bought] key then, no, you have no
prior install of Windows XP to detect nor the install media to scan to
determine that you have a qualifying instance of Windows XP.

Windows 7 upgrade paths
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyId=e170eba1-5bab-401f-bbf5-00f0ee7fe0fb

There is no upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7. You can migrate but
you cannot upgrade. If you have Windows XP (installed or its install CD),
the install of Windows 7 does a *fresh* installation. The OS partition gets
wiped when Windows 7 gets installed. A data transfer wizard is provided
that is to help you move your data files into the fresh install of Windows
7; however, if you want to ensure your data files survive the migration, do
a backup of them onto other media before the migration so you can restore
them from that backup media.

I will talk from my experience,

I think WindowsXP MUST BE INSTALLED to proceed with an Upgrade Win7 DVD,
inserting an XP installation CD is not enough.

Here's what I did when I got my Upgrade disks in october. I booted the
computer from the Windows7 Upgrade DVD, formated the HD and did a clean
install. When came the time to activate, it didn't activate, the response I
got was that I used an upgrade serial number.

I restored my XP installation from my Ghost image, booted into XP, inserted
the Win7 DVD, on startup, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade, I clicked Yes
and at one point in the installation process, it ask me what type of
installation, I choose Optional, from there the Win7 installation program
created a Windows.old folder, move my XP installation to it and did a clean
installation of Seven. It activated just fine.

So that tells me that the Windows.old folder must be present to activate an
installation from an Upgrade DVD and you must NOT format your HD before
installing.

Although your conclusion is 'okay' - there is a workaround out there.

Jlo8441,

Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will
not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option
to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process
will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old
folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in
other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

What you said is good practice. There is, however, a utility from the
LapLink folks that will move all your applications.
