updated install freezes

XP updated itself automatically again. But this time, it got stuck for 12
hours on "Installing update 4 of 20," so I shut down my PC manually.

What is wrong with this update? What am I supposed to do?

Hello Mike,

Try using MalwaÑeBytes' and SUPERAntiSpywaÑe to make sure there isnt any
hidden malware problems and then CCleaner to remove temp and unused files.,
Do a FULL scan .

I'd rather just blow off the update. It's packed with various bugs. These
updates always create numerous problems.

The updates do not cause the problems, it's all the other trash
(Non-Microsoft) such as virus programs causing the problems.

See if you can update manually: Open Internet Explorer (only) to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any
Critical Security Updates offered (e.g., KB982381). If a Root Certificates
update is listed in the Optional Software updates category on the left-hand
side of the scan results window, install it to take full advantage of IE's
enhanced security.

Tip: Click on Show Update History link in left-hand menu to see which, if
any, updates failed to install. Post the KB number of the update(s) and the
associate error number in a reply to this post.

I followed your advice. Now it gets hung up in Windows shutting down. BTW,
there is no Show Update History on the left.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Did you recently have occasion to reinstall WinXP for some reason?

SP3, Norton AV totally updated. I installed Norton myself. No antispyware,
no firewall. XP was installed on a new hard drive 2 months ago.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVERYTHING WAS RUNNING SMOOTHLY BEFORE THIS AUTOMATIC
WINDOWS UPDATE.

You still need to identify the update. If there is something wrong with
the update, you can uninstall it. If you don't know which one it was, I
suppose you could uninstall all the updates from that day (then run
System Restore for good measure).

As a rule, it is best to install only security updates. And you should
always stay away from hardware drivers from the Microsoft site! Chances
are the drivers you have are fine just the way they are. If you did have
a need to update them, you should go to the actual manufacturer's
website to do so.
