My XP SP3 machine valiantly tries to install this update but always fails.
It seems to have no trouble installing other updates. What's with this
one??

What makes you think it is not installing?

Are you getting a specific error message?

Go to Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. Make sure the Show Updates
box is checked. Is KB976098 listed?

See the section "Updates from the previous cumulative Windows time zone
update" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976098. If you do not reside in
one of those time zones, you can "hide" this update.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB976098 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

There's a little known issue with Comodo Antivirus or Comodo Firewall
(or the complete suite) preventing the installation of KB976098 -- do
you have any Comodo software installed?

If yes, right-click the system-tray Comodo icon and click 'Exit'

Now try to install the MS update

Re-start Comodo

Important: you should enable the Windows Firewall while Comodo Firewall
is off.

The fact that WIndows says so. Aftter running the updates (Automatic
updates) a window appears saying "The following updates could not be
installed" and lists this update as not installed.

Nope. No Comodo. Never heard of it.

Thanks! I was about to follow your directions when I looked in COntrol
Panel/Add/Remove Programs. There is an update in there with an almost
similar name called Hotfix for Windows XP (KB976098-v2) installed
11/26/2009. Are these the same? The scan of the system shows the update
(KB976098) is missing and Auto Update wants to install itbut can't. IS that
because the update is alreadyinstalled?

Sure sounds like that's the case, Joe. Steps #1 thru #4 will address the
behavior.
