This has been an extreme annoyance for the past few days. I am using IE 8 on
my Windows 7. Every time I try to open the following page on my website, it
gives me the error in a pop-up:

UNABLE TO OPEN THE WEB PAGE
http://pulvisetumbra.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=threadplot

OPERATION ABORTED.

even when the page has clearly loaded in the background. When I click "okay"
or close the pop-up, it brings me to an "Internet Explorer cannot display the
page" window. Sometimes I can get around the blasted error by clicking very
quickly on another link on the page, but whenever I try to go back to that
particular part of the website I get the same error.

I am so fed up with this, I am now using Mozilla Firefox, which has given me
no such error.

Is there anything that can be done? I would like use IE.

Did you upgrade to Win7 or is it a brand-new computer?

Is it a Win7 64-bit computer?

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

IE8 in all OSS]

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

4. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

IE8, no add-ons mode, scripting disabled, limited privileges:
site page loads

IE8, no add-ons mode, limited privileges:
site page loads

IE8 in a virtual machine, add-ons enabled, full privileges:
site page loads (and shows ads)

So either their server- or client-side scripts were screwed up (and that's
for what you saw the error message) or the ads they are spewing out in the
web page are corrupting their web page layout or scripts because they are
not properly isolating or limiting the HTML that can be exercised by those
ads. Talk to the forum admins. It's their problem.

Hi C,

Tools>Compatibility View Settings - check "Include updated web site
information from Microsoft" (best solution)
or
Add probaords.com to your compatibility view list. (second best solution,
but other sites that you visit may still not display properly in IE8)

(the site is listed as requiring compatibility view
res://iecompat.dll/iecompatdata.xml)

Regards.

Hello CKusma,

Just an FYI for you.

It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They
will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well
as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out
about hardware and software compatibility.)
'Windows 7 Compatibility: Resources for PCs, Devices and Software
Programs'
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and
"software".

There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to
help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
'Windows Client | Deploy, Manage, Desktop, 7, Vista, XP | TechNet'

In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of
Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!

As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers
installed.
Thanks again,
John M.
