Ubuntu 9.10 has been judged and found to be lacking.

I ran the live-cd and checked it out a bit.

Can't use Forte Agent, can't use my favorite file manager "XYplorer",
can't use Foobar, can't use Irfanview without downloading something else
and going through another 20 steps, can't, can't, can't, can't, can't
and on and on and on.

Replacements for this, replacements for that, I have to have
replacements for all the applications that I cherish and have come to
appreciate. I don't want replacements, or something just about like this
app or that app, etc...

That is about as far as I got with the Live CD. After I found out I
couldn't use any applications that I normally use, I just ejected the CD
and tossed it in the trash.

Thanks for nothing Ubuntu. I sure am glad I didn't actually install you.

Oh, you mean you can't install programs while using Ubuntu? Wow. Now I
know it sucks.

That's good advice. As it stands now, Ubuntu ripped me out of the 30
cents on the CD-R I had to furnish and then throw away.

Well, doofus, Linux isn't MS. You can't run MS software on Linux
(natively, anyway - can run some via WINE). Similarly, you can't run
Linux software on MS - at all (unless you count a virtual machine).

What the fuck good is it then? There isn't a file explorer that can come
close to touching XYplorer made for Linux. Same with Foobar. Same for
Irfanview, and on and on.

They do have Gimp, I'll give 'em that, but I can use that in Windows and
don't have to sacrifice 40 other app's that are clearly superior in
order to try a "free" operating system.

Linux is worth exactly what you pay for it: NOTHING.

Nobody in their right mind would want to run crappy Linux software on
Windows box.

For one thing, it's stable. For another, it's secure. For another it
comes with software that would cost you several hundred dollars to equal
on an MS machine. Seems quite reasonable to me, but Linux is not for
everyone - particularly not for those with no vision and less than a room
temperature IQ.

If you wish to pay a few thousand dollars for those apps or operate
illegally, then I guess MS is for you - that's your decision.

I use almost exclusively all freeware products except for my file
manager and newsreader. But, hardly any of the freeware products that
seem to be worth using are compatible with Ubuntu. So, what to do?

That leaves out most Linux posters I've encountered on Usenet. Such a
crazy bunch they seem to be. All of them post about 10,000 posts a day
about how Bill Gates is the debbil or some such nonsense.

Freeware app's don't usually cost much. The problem I am having, in
deciding whether or not to use Ubuntu, is that all the freeware app's I
use on Windows seem to be better than the similar ones available for
Ubuntu.

Ray, I want to thank you, I think you are doing an invaluable service to
this group.

trolls show up here making noise and as long as you and others engage
them in threads like this, the trollage is contained and doesn't spill
over into other threads, where people have serious business fixing
problems.

I used to deplore threads like this. but now I see they serve an
important function. you and some others are sort of like 'troll keepers'.

well, for those innocents who get trapped in the cage reading the thread,
you provide a little education about other operating systems, which is
also good. people should know that Linux is not Windows and a shift to
Linux requires some re-orientation. (same thing when I try to use
Windows.)

I get caught reading these threads out of a kind of 'rubber-necking'
curiosity. (I also like some gruesome horror-movies.)

but above all, thank your service as a troll-keeper. you have infinite
patience.

So just keep on using windows. I don't see the point of this pathetic rant.

If Windows suits you then use it. Many see Linux as a very valid
alternative.
The whole point is CHOICE.....

Ubuntu is a great platform for people that compromise their windows
computers repeatidly and that don't need to interact with BUSINESS.

As an example, family friend has a young kid that keeps clicking on
everything and downloading anything and everything - I've done all I
can, including a limited user account, to keep the Windows XP computer
from being compromised, but it gets hacked about once every 2 months...
After rebuilding it for the 5th time I wiped it and installed Ubuntu,
setup email, browser, automatic updates (and there are a lot), and
they've not had a problem since.

The one initial problem is that their Epson printer isn't/wasn't
supported and they bought a new HP that is.

They are still using that computer, with Ubuntu installed, and the kid
complains about not being able to install a lot of games, but the family
can get their email and browse the web and they can do school work just
fine.

In my own case, we use Linux from different vendors to keep up on what's
happening in the market, but our work machines are all Win based.
