I finally found the missing library on a german mirror. Totem
crashed... restarted it and it tried to work then stalled. So I tried
MPlayer and it worked okay. Plus I had to run the install-css.sh. Only
one web site mentioned the precise procedure and it also checks if you
have everything installed.

Well I'll be... I was missing one library. Plus they provided the
missing step: install-css.sh.

I've paid for the dvds so why can't I play them on Linux?
I don't see what the big legal deal is.

No, it isn't. But you just about have to be a good sleuth to find the
info. That's the hard part.

Totem doesn't work very well and it crashed after a while. So I tried
Mplayer and it worked pretty good. Of course running Linux under VMWare
Fusion has its other problems. An older Fedora distro started the
install and just froze up. I'm just interested in oses in general and
like to try them all if I can afford it. My next step, and the hardest
one, is to convince my wife in letting me buy a nice HP with win7 on it.
Gotta do something in my golden years.

Just went down to Costco and got another stack of DVDs.
I've got plenty of bandwidth so I'm going to download the latest Ubuntu.
I notice that there are 5 separate 4.9Gb downloads to do. I'm not sure
why so large. (???)
All the other distros weigh in around 3.9Gb total.

I had "fooled around" with various linux distros for a over a decade. My
experience parallels yours and proly most others who have tried linux.
At first, linux is "fun" just like most new toys, then it quickly turns
into a job...one that you are not being paid for. At that point in time,
most simply get rid of it.
It is user friendly but only up to a certain point, then it becomes
sheer drudgery, as you, me, and many others have discovered.
The problem as I see it...and I come from a technical/marketing
background, it that there are simple too many different distros. No real
focus as anyone and everyone can create their own distro.
linux is an unfulfilled promise and always will be, because open source
is the genie that can never be put back into the bottle.

I easily had Agent 1.92 running under Wine (although I didn't stick
with Linux in general - more of an experiment). Wouldn't surprise me
if newer versions also worked under it, as even with the new 6.0
version (I use it for binary newsgroups), it seems very well-behaved.

We run 2 servers here at work. A private server (domain, data & fileserver)
and a public server (web server, ftp, email etc.)
To run on Windows servers I would need to buy 2 Windows Servers @ $1200
each, 5 extra CALS @ $200 and probably SQL Server @ no idea.
That's $2600 + SQL server.
In the time I've been administrator I would have needed to upgrade Servers
so probably double that.
I also would have probably needed a course to learn how to administer it.
That's a weeks lost work and another couple of hundred dollars.

Instead I downloaded linux.
For the last 7 years I've enjoyed haing 2 systems capable of doing exactly
what Windows Server can do - plus security updates, software updates, no
vulnerability to virus's or nasty IIS exploits and it has cost not a cent.
I can customize things to work exactly the way we need, not limited to the
capabilities of whatever was packaged with Windows (or paying for 3rd party
software that might do the job).

A lot of the "new" features that pop up in Windows I have already had for a
couple of years in linux anyway.

So to those who say you get what you pay for, I would argue that you get A
LOT more.

To each his own I guess...

Course, with the de facto monopoly that Frank is so happy with, the
choices are very limited. It makes it easy for someone who is not to
bright like Frank choose.

Also, Frank hasn't tried a distro in years and is, as always, talking
out his ass as Ubuntu has become more and more user friendly with each
and every new release.

Try viewing the DVDs in VLC Player. I also strongly recommend you
upgrade to Karmic and use the ext4 file system. It's much smoother and
faster than ext3. Karmic's general appearance is much nicer too.

You just keep trying to push that INFERIOR Ubuntu in the windows forums.
99.99999% of the visitors here are smart enough to see through you. You
are the groups main troll and lying sack of donkey shit. Most everyone
tells you to fuck off. How about going to the Ubuntu forums and helping
those sorry sacks out with their problems? There are thousands of people
with problems trying to get that shitty Ubuntu to work. If only they knew!
LOL!
