I feel kind of sorry for you, GreyCloud. I am sorry you are having such
a hard time just playing a DVD. That must be a real headache.

Spain isn't one of those countries and a couple of clicks in the
Software Center and all your needs are met in less than a minute.

Upgrade to Karmic and go to Applications > Ubuntu Software Center >

more user friendly than 8.10.

Yes it does.
The ability you profess ubuntu to have isn't provided by ubuntu.
It comes from a third party (probably some third world thieving nation)
repository server.

Just great!
I gotta move to a third world country to play DVD's I'll no longer be
able to afford.
Any more bright ideas?

Which repository are those in?
Bear in mind that I'm in the US, not another country where it is legal
to do these things on Linux.

Nah, just a challenge to try and get this stuff to work.
If I really wanted to watch a dvd, I got to my living room and watch it
there. :))

What is missing is that in the US you won't find any Linux distro that
will play commercial dvds. It isn't legal to do so.
I'm sure in other countries it is. Maybe I should find a mirror site in
a foreign country to download where it is legal.

A blank dvd is worth more than Ubuntu. Save your dvd for something more
important. Like backing up porn! LOL!

There is no question that it really works.
It does.
The legality of it is the question.
If it were legal to do so, then Canonical would bundle those codecs with
the OS.
They do not.
This ain't rocket science.

totem - add the libdvdcdss library - or whatever it's called - don't
recall the details.

A CD will do just fine, no need for a DVD.

More proof that you've never downloaded, burned and installed Ubuntu. No
DVD required, a CD will do nicely.

I did. I checked out another posted url and found that I was missing a
required library. So I checked around on various mirrors and downloaded
it from a german site. Now it finally works. Totem tried to run, but
crashed for whatever reasons... so I started up MPlayer and it worked
pretty good. But it took me a bit too long to find a solution and I
just about gave it up.
