touchpad scroll no longer works

M

My laptop (Compaq Presario R3000) recently got a virus. I took it to a
technician who did a clean restore. After that, everything worked fine,
except for the scroll function on the touch-pad driver. Somebody gave me a
link to download a new driver from ALPS, but it did not work. Scroll
function still does not work, so frustrating (but of course, it is not a
critical function, just convenient). It worked fine before the restore. The
technician moved away and his phone number is disconnected, so going back to
him is not an option. My computer is running Windows XP Media Center Edition
- version 5.1/service pack 3.

I don't know if this is relevant but my daughter laptop also recently had a
system restore. I noticed a "SALPS Touchpad Driver for Windows 2000/XP
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&produc

t=442914ynaptics pointing device" in the system startup tray, at lower right
hand of screen. I was told not to have too many items in the start up tray
as it slows down the start up of computer. I was researching this item to
see if it could be removed from start up tray. Under msconfig/start up tab,
I found listed.....synTPLpr and synTPEnh. In researching, I found these are
related to the synaptics touch-pad driver and do not need to be in start up
tray. (I un-clicked them and restarted computer but pointing device icon is
still there!) I read that the synTPLpr is the touch-pad driver and synTPEnh
goes along with touch-pad driver and provides additional configurations. Her
touch-pad and scroll bar work fine, by the way. So I looked at my start up
items, under msconfig and I only had one item listed for touch-pad driver,
which is.....SynTPStart and it is unchecked, so it does not open at start up.
I do not know if this has anything to do with my current touch-pad issue or
not?

Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix the touchpad so that the scroll
feature works once again? Do I need to download a new one? The last time
that I tried to download a new touch-pad driver, this is where I was told to
go, but like I said...the outcome was negative. It did not work.

If a new driver is needed, a link would be nice, just to make things easier
since I'm lazy! lol

Thanks and have a great day to all! :)

Hi Mindy,

I went to HP's site and here is the link for your Compaq:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=442914

which is the same as your link.

There is an Alps driver there. You can check Device Manager and see if
the driver is the same one you installed. If not, download and install it.

If the Synaptics driver has been disabled by you in MSCONFIG, that most
likely is your issue. Make sure the driver loads and try again.

You may have to configure the scroll feature in the software, accessible
either from the Tray at the right of the Taskbar where the time is
displayed or in Control Panel.

This doesn't really resolve your problem, but Staples had a Logitech
wireless compact mouse on sale last week for $20. I find the mouse much
easier to use than the touchpad on both my laptops. YMMV.

Terry R: Thanks for the reply. The first sentence cracked me up! lol

Ok......so, first.....I'm not sure where the device manager is to check on
the type of driver that I have on my laptop. I did go into msconfig and put
a check mark back next to the SynTPStart so that the touch-pad driver would
open in the tray at start up. I was told to re-boot at this point for change
to occur. After re-boot, the icon for touch-pad driver did not show up in
tray next to clock! grrrrrrrrr

Per your suggestion, I went to the control panel and clicked on the mouse.
This is the message that I got.....unable to connect to the synaptics
pointing device driver. If you have installed another SP/2 pointing device
driver, please un-install the synaptics drive by clicking on the yes button.
You then need to re-install your pointing device driver for your external
device again.

After clicking on yes to un-install, I got this message.......After removing
your synaptics pointing device software, your system must be re-booted. Your
pointing device may be inoperable until after the re-boot. At this point you
can select OK or cancel.

I clicked cancel for the moment, to come talk to you first. I had previously
tried to download another touch-pad driver from the link I was given (the
same one that you gave me), without un-installing anything first. I believe
it is sitting in a temp folder at the moment. Should I delete the one in
temp folder and the one under mouse in the control panel? Also, I was a bit
nervous that if I do click on yes and un-install the touch-pad driver, that
would leave me with no pointing device. How will I manage my way around the
screen to download a new one? Will I still be able to do that if pointing
device is gone?

Appreciate your help. I look forward to your reply. :)

Billns: Thanks for the reply. I have heard of the wireless mouse for the
laptop but have never seen or used one. I am curious to try one out. $20 is
a great price! If I am unable to fix my problem, at least I know there is a
back-up alternative. :)

Hi Mindy,

I would make sure the downloaded driver is the one from the link, maybe
save it to your Desktop so you know where it's at. Then remove the
Synaptics driver from Control Panel and Add/Remove programs. Reboot.
Then install the new driver.

You will have mouse functions without the driver. Just nothing special.

Report back. I'll check in on Monday,

Did you adjust the "areas" for the scroll function to be large enough to
see your "touch point"?

Terry R: Sorry I didn't get on the computer by Monday. I share it with my
kids, so sometimes they hog it up! Hopefully you will get this message
tomorrow (Tuesday the 14th). I figured out how to get into the device
manager and it said I had an ALPS driver in there. However, when I went into
the control panel, under add/remove programs...I found a Synaptics driver.
This seems rather confusing to me? I deleted the Synaptics driver under
add/remove programs, like you said. Then I went to the link that you provided
to download the new ALPS driver. (I did re-boot after removing the Synaptics
driver). I also went into msconfig to make sure there was a check next to
the touch-pad driver so that it would appear in the tray on start up, also re-
booting at this point.

After taking the above steps....nothing has changed. When I downloaded the
ALPS driver, I was told I already had that program and did I want to over-
ride the existing program, so I said yes. It does not show up in the start
up tray. I have no idea where to go to find it, so that I can enable the
scroll feature. One thing that has changed is that when I go into the
control panel and click on the mouse icon...I am now told that this feature
is working, when before it was not.

When I downloaded the ALPS driver, I opted to put it in my "downloads" folder.
When I went to this folder after downloading the driver I found two icons.
When I click on the first I get a message that says "Windows cannot open this
file. To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. If
you would like, Windows can go online to look it up automatically". If I
click on the second icon, a notepad comes up with a bunch of computer lingo
on it. This is getting so frustrating. I know it is not REALLY a big deal
and it is not critical for my computer to function or anything. It is just a
feature that should be there and it is not. Any other ideas? I have no idea
what to do at this point?

Hey Terry R: I just thought of something else. My daughter has a Synaptics
touch-pad driver on her laptop (although we do not have the exact same model,
but hers is an older version like mine) and it works just fine. Do I have to
have an ALPS driver? Maybe that is the problem? Maybe I should try the one
by Synaptics and see if that one works better? Also, I came across the
following page while doing some research......

http://driverwhiz.com/drivers-en?br...-10000003453&gclid=CMimgOKEhaECFVhJ2godIDEzug

Maybe that would solve the problem? I don't know much about Driver Whiz or
if it is legitimate. You know how sometimes when things sound too good to be
true, they usually are. This page makes it sound like this "Driver Whiz" is
the ultimate answer for any touch pad problems. Any thoughts on it? I'll
check in tomorrow in the late morn. or early afternoon, to see if you have
checked in. The kids will be in school, so I won't have to fight with them
over who gets access to MY laptop! darn kids! lol

3rd message for today: oh boy, i did it now. i was messing around for the
heck of it. i went into device manager and clicked on the ALPS driver. that
is where i found the box that came up for it's settings. nowhere in there
did i find anything about enabling the scroll feature. i did find a box to
click on for any updates. i clicked it and re-booted like it said when
updating was done. at this point i noticed the synaptics pointing device in
the start up tray by the clock! i went into the control panel and under
add/remove programs i found the synaptics pointing device had been added.
the ALPS touch-pad driver is still there as well. when i clicked on the
mouse icon under control panel....the alps driver had been replaced by the
synaptics one! i know i can delete it just like i did earlier. why would
the update feature under an ALPS driver, change it to a synaptics one? even
after the update, the scroll feature still does not work! what the heck is
going on here?

Hi Mindy,

I'm always leery of any site that wants to "scan" my machine for driver
updates.

It is strange that the ALPS icon and Synaptics icon are both in Control
Panel. When you open both, are they the same? If so, you could do a
search for *.cpl in Explorer and see if the Alps icon is named so you
can recognize it. If so, you could rename it to alps.cpl.old to see if
the correct icon disappeared. If so, you could then delete it. But it
doesn't hurt leaving it if you're not comfortable doing things like that.

If the Synaptics option panel in Control Panel doesn't offer any way to
configure scrolling, I don't know what else to say. It's hard to say
for sure if that driver is 100% compatible with your hardware, since it
wasn't the driver from the laptop manufacturers website, which didn't
seem to do what you wanted either.

Doing a little searching, I came up with this site. Read through it and
see if it offers what you need, and if so download the modified driver
and follow the instructions for installing it.

Let me know how it goes,
