Toshiba Portege R100 does not recognize battery

Hi to all,


Toshiba Portege R100 with the original internal battery
(I have bought second-hand one about a week ago).

The problem is as follows: very often the system does not
recognize laptop battery (looks like it's simply drawn from the slot).
No battery level indicator, no system battery settings available etc.
I suspect hardware failure because there are no battery lights
(diodes)
either (should be orange for charging, green full charged).

If I disconnect the AC power laptop works on the
"removed" battery flawlessly (system say "battery powered"),
no battery level indicator or warnings until it just turns off.
Sometimes, just before turning off, battery light flashes
as it's supposed to.

Interestingly, when I remove and reinsert battery while laptop
is turned on, quite often the battery is "seen"- system
battery levels, laptop lights work. But after an hour or so stop.

Sometimes there are battery lights lit, but system doesn't "see"
the battery. Sometimes (rarely) the lights are off, the system shows
"battery absent", but battery charge status displays


I have cleaned battery contacts, no difference.

Thus my questions to the gurus:
- Is it really a hardware failure or maybe system ACPI problem?
- If it's hardware, which one is probably dying: the battery
(an old one, maybe it should retire as it deserved) or laptop itself?

Same results will the 2nd battery?

Measure the battery voltage if you can...you may have a dead cell and
the charging circuit gets confused. Each cell is 3.2-3.6V on a
lithium battery. Just a guess.
