    running WinXP pro SP3 with IE8 (8.0.6)

my tool bars for IE have gone black. if i mouse over them the boxes for the
drop down menus appear but the name of the menus stay black. i have looked
at the settings and found nothing out of the ordinary. tried to reset IE but
no change. looked at all control panel settings that change backgrounds,
menu colors, etc. and have found nothing that works. don't know why the
problem occured and not sure exactly when. no programs were installed before
this problem and no changes to the registry were noted on my scan logs.
would like to see my tool bars again, any suggestions before i completely
uninstall and start all over?? no suggestions involving the need for xray
    vision plz (-:

Try selecting the Windows XP (Luna) theme instead of classic theme.

According to that link, in each case the user created the situation
themselves. So that means they made changes and then when they went back to
IE they didn't see this problem? IE does not come defaulted to any of those
configurations so either the user is causing it or it's malware in which
case other problems likely are possible too.
I've noticed quite a few of these black toolbar complaints lately and
have to wonder if there are that many clueless users out there or whether
there is another mechanism at work. Since, unless I missed it, not one
person here or on other newsgroups has mentioned that they were tweaking
things, I have to figure there are other causes. All that link does is pose
a few different ways to duplicate the symptoms; but I'm doubting that it
addresses all of them. Likewise, it's interesting I also haven't noticed
anyone returning to indicate that fix was the final fix.
I have a feeling something else is at work there.

    RIGHT ANSWER.

That was a good call. I never would have found that one, at least not on
    purpose.

I was getting the black tool bars, and had set to Windows Classic. By this
suggestion, I set to Windows XP, then checked IE and all was well. I then
set back to Windows Classic, and all was still well.

Right Click the Desktop, click Properties, select the Appearance Tab, and in
the Windows and Buttons box, select Windows XP Style. Click Apply. Now IE
will show the tool bars correctly. You can return to the Windows and Buttons
box and select Windows Classic if you want, IE will continue to display the
    tool bars correctly.
