The Snipping Tool has disappeared

Flightless Bird
The Snipping Tool, which normally resides on my taskbar, has disappeared. A
search for Snipping Tools does not show where the program lives or how I can
get it back.

There was no obvious reason why it disappeared overnight.

The location is: C:/Windows\System32

Click on System 32 and in the right hand pane, scroll down to it.

Hi, Walter.

For some reason that has never been clear to me, the Snipping Tool does not
work unless we turn on Tablet PC Components. And Help and Support does not
even mention this requirement. :>(

Click Control Panel | Programs and Features. Then, in the menu to the left
of the main window, click Turn Windows features on or off. A new window
will appear and, after a few seconds to populate it, there will be a long
list. Near the bottom is "Tablet PC Components." Check this box and OK
your way out. Then you should find Snipping Tool under All Programs |
Accessories.

Click the start globe and start typing snipping tool And its at the top of
the list

That's because the snipping tool *is* one of the Tablet Components
introduced with Vista.

Well, yes, but...I've never had a tablet computer at all, but I've been
using the Snipping Tool for a few years. Where's the logic of having to
activate Tablet PC Components on a desktop computer with no Tablet? That's
what is not clear to me.

Follow Trev's advice to get it running, then pin the icon to the taskbar by
right clicking on the taskbar icon while the program is running.

Any icon can be pinned or unpinned that way...

Not all of them, unfortunately. I have a couple of shortcuts pointing
to batch files, and I haven't found a way to pin them to the task bar.

I was thinking (or not thinking :)) of shortcuts to programs, and
obviously forgot about broader uses...

In response to your remark, I just added a toolbar to my taskbar, which
happens (by random choice) to be a folder that contains a manual I
downloaded. And then another folder, and another. The last one is the
gadgets folder, and it even has a subfolder.

These were done by right clicking on the taskbar, then clicking on Toolbars
in the pop-up menu, and then clicking on New Toolbar. I then chose the
above few folders at random just to see how it would go.

It isn't pretty, and I strongly suspect it wouldn't be quite what you want.

If instead I just drag a folder from Windows Explorer to the taskbar, it
gets pinned inside the menu that pops up from the Windows Explorer taskbar
icon - possibly not what you want either.

Ah, I see your point. I can only speculate that when the tablet
features were grafted onto Vista editions, and then carried forward into
Windows 7, the idea of placing this tool in a more logical place, such
as Accessories, simply never occurred to the developers.

You probably are right. Now I know where to find the Snipping Tool, so it's
no big deal - for me. But it sure was hard to find it in the first place!
And I'm sure a LOT of users still haven't found it - just like the OP in
this thread. :>(

I think I read the clue in a book I bought when I got 7, or maybe I got it
in this NG. But I have to agree with what Bruce Chambers said:

Never mind that that is their job, and also the job of the testers at the
company if the developers fail :)

You should be able to find by clicking the "Start" Orb and
searching for "snipping".

Geez I thought for the heck of it I would look for snipping tool on my win7
64bit pro machine and there it was under accessories just like it was when I
ran Vista on a different drive. Do you mean it is not there by default? If
not how did it get there on my machine?

It depends on how Windows was initially installed/configured. The
Snipping Toll won't appear unless the Tablet PC Components (Control
Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off) were
installed, even though it's being used on a desktop PC.

I spoke a bit inaccurately in my earlier post, meaning that it would
have been better if the developers had made the Snipping Tool available
by default, with having to add other, unnecessary, features.

Gene, that was to find it, not run it. I assume anyone reading a NG knows how
to make a shortcut to run it. Maybe a bad assumption.

Bruce: I am in no way arguing the posts at all just stating how it is on my
machine. I installed Vista business originally (no Tablet components
specifically chosen) on this machine. when it came time to switch to win7 I
simply did a fresh install of win7 pro 64bit on a new ssd and once again no
tablet components specifically chosen. Both times snipping tool was located
in the accessories folder. On this machine I would have to say that the tool
was chosen and installed by default as I know I never chose it.

I meant you to understand that since I had created a shortcut to it, I had
previously found it.

The post of yours that I replied to seemed to imply that you thought I
couldn't find the Snipping tool. That was a trifle insulting, if I may say
so.

Bloch is a surprisingly common surname. My grandfather came here from Riga,
Latvia. Did yours? Or did your great-grandfather? If not, we're probably
not related.

I understand Bloch to be from a Polish word that originally meant foreigner
(cognate of Wales, Wallachia, olah, vlach, et al), but in Poland a couple
of centuries ago, it began to be applied to Italian Jews who had migrated
to Poland. This is not the source of my nickname (Gino), but it justifies
it :)
