The Registry Cannot load the hive (file)

I have a friend and apparently the Lord doesn't like him very much.
He gets a blue screen of death with the following message.
The Registry Cannot load the hive (file)
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its lot or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent ot not verifiable.

I googled this message and the only way I see to fix it requires the
Windows media. He is currently traveling the world and doesn't have his
CD with him.
Is there a way for him to recover the registry some other way?

This is why I use a Mac....

My approach would be to have your friend use another computer to burn a
Live Linux CD such as Knoppix and boot from that disk. This disk can
be used to substitute for the CD with Recovery Console steps in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article

"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545>

You will have to look past the exact steps and instead follow the
intent in the KB article and use Linux to copy, move, and rename backup
registry files as directed in the article.

Yikes.
that won't happen. I don't have the machine and there's no way he's
technically adept enough to do something like that.

It seems that the Lord is punishing your friend for straying from the right
and narrow path (the Mac path). He will need spiritual guidance in order to
return to the flock. To restore Windows to its former glory he should
perform a manual system restore (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545)
which is nothing for the faint hearted. May the Lord guide him.

We know what this error is and we also know how to fix it on systems
where there is no XP media available. It happens all the time.

There is no need to substitute for a Recovery Console CD when you can
just make a Recovery Console CD. You have to make a CD to boot on
something anyway and nobody has yet been able to tell me how to run
the equivalent of an NTFS chkdsk /r command from a Knoppix CD (but I
would like to know).

The MS article is geared toward a system that was booted into Recovery
Console, not a Knoppix CD, so that adds another level of (perhaps)
unnecessary unfamiliarity into the equation. Maybe somebody has a
separate set of instructions on how to fix this problem with a Knoppix
CD?

You need to run chkdsk /r before you start trying to copy files around
anyway, and you need to do it first. Then try to boot - things may be
fine after that.

Eliminate or repair possible file system corruption from a power
failure, ungraceful shutdown or aborted restart.

Have any of these events occurred?

You should first boot your PC into the XP Recovery Console using a
bootable XP installation CD or a bootable CD with the XP Recovery
Console on it. This is not the same as any Recovey or System CDs that
may have come with a store bought system.

If any of those events have occurred, you should boot into the Windows
Recovery Console using a bootable XP installation CD, or create on a
bootable XP Recovery Console CD. This is not the same as any recovery
disks that might have come a store bought system.

If your friend has a access to a PC that can get on the Internet, burn
a CD and can follow directions, I would start here:

You can create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD when no XP media is
available:

For each of your hard disks, you should then run:

chkdsk /r

For example, from the Recovery Console prompt, enter:

chkdsk c: /r

He bought a new machine in Australia... VAT and everything. He's
constantly on the move.
