System Properties

I have a laptop here that won't bring up System Properties either by right
clicking My Computer and going to Properties, or under System in the
Control Panel. However I can do Start/Run/sysdm.cpl and it comes up. On
further inspection I discovered that *nothing* will come up from within the
    Control Panel.
I haven't checked it for malware yet, but the owner rarely goes on the
internet except for upgrades to his business software. All his other
    programs seem to work OK.
Everything is backed up, so it wouldn't that big of a deal to wipe it out
and start over. It has a restore partition.
Does this sound like the way to go or is there a simple fix?

I would scan for malware first, before doing anything else. It only takes
once on the 'net, IYKWIM. . .

Have you tried System Restore to a day when it WAS working? That also may do
    it.

You can try fixing the CPL association using the link here:

These days, you MUST rule out malware and not assume anything. A computer
does not need to be connected to the internet to get infected.

Remind me NEVER to post again until I've cleaned or attempted to clean a
computer up. It was loaded with Trojan Vundo H, a rogue security app, and
other stuff as well. One of those that makes it hard to run antimalware
    apps without renaming executables, etc.
But between Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware, it cleaned up nicely and all
the things that were broke are working now.
I just didn't think I saw symptoms of malware and jumped the gun.
    Thanks!

Just because Microsoft shuts down their server doesn't necessarily mean
that this newsgroup will disappear. Other newsgroup servers will still
carry it, although it's very likely that there will not be quite as much
message traffic. So just switch to a different server other than
msnews.microsoft.com and you won't have to worry. There are some free
ones out there like eternal-september.org. I use Agent Premium News
    (APN) http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php it's only $2.95 a month for
12 GB and I only use text newsgroups and have plenty of bandwidth.

Yes, I've already begun dabbling with other servers. I've just got to be
careful keeping my personalities straight. "Menno Hershberger" was my
default in the microsoft groups. Don't want people to think I'm
schizophrenic. I've already been caught being Li'l Abner... :)
