Stopping search from the Address bar in IE8

Is there some way that I can stop my computer from searching from the
address bar in IE8?

I am using Windows XP Pro SP3 and IE8. I have 2 home pages set up (in case
that matters).

Here is what happens: I type a website address in the address bar and, if I
mistype the address, sometimes I get the message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information

That would be okay with me because then I can look and see that I mistyped
the address and I just fix the typo to get to the page I want.

But, sometimes it will automatically do some kind of search from the address
bar and I'll see something like this in the address bar:

http://www.bing.com/search?q=sjadds.com&src=IE-SearchBox&Form=IE8SRC

At other times, it will do a similar search but with Comcast instead of Bing
(I have Comcast as my ISP).

I don't want the address bar to do any kind of search, and I don't want IE8
to change what I originally typed in the address bar. I want it to leave it
as is so I can just go back and fix the typo without having to re-enter the
entire website address.

I have tried going to the Advanced settings in IE8 Tools and turning off
search from the address bar, and I have tried removing or disabling search
engines from the add-ons. But it won't stop searching from the address bar.

Is there anything I can do to get IE8 to NEVER search from the address bar?

Thanks.

It's probably not IE doing it. It's probably a "feechur" of your ISP's DNS.
You would have to trace the packet flow using a protocol analyser such
as WireShark to know for sure.

Alternatively, if you're lucky, on one of the pages, e.g. the one from
Comcast, if you look closely you may find that they provide a link
to let you request that this "feechur" be disabled.

Thanks.

I did suspect that it is one of their stupid "feechurs" that we all want,
need, and love that they sneak in there. I did try checking everywhere in
Comcast's so-called "help" and couldn't find it. But, when I get a chance
I'll try the WireShark idea if I can figure that out.

I hate when these companies seize my computer for their own purposes -- such
as to automatically direct me to their pages so they can get more page hits
and sell more and charge more for the ads on those pages.

Hello Jay-T,

In IE 8, go to Tools - Internet Options. Then click on the 'Advanced' tab.
Scroll down until you see a section marked, 'Search from the Address Bar'.
It is just before the 'Security' section.

Then, click on 'Do not submit unknown addresses to your auto-search
provider'.

Hopefully this will fix your problem.

Good luck.
