Spybot S&D

I threw this question on a previous post,but thing it just got lost in all
the other answers that were part of another question.So hope it is all right
to re ask this anew.I have window's live one care,and malwarebytes. Want to
put Spybot back on computer. when I had it before it did great job,but I got
spooked about it and deleted it. Is is a good one to use. How about AVG.
window's one care apparently does not work very well as I seem to have an
infected computer. Thanks to all who help the helpless.

In my opinion, Spybot has declined in recent years. It's spyware
definitions are not updated very often and it seems to miss things
that other malware scanners find. I still use it, though, but only
for one of its Immunize feature, which adds their groomed list of bad
web sites to your Hosts file and to your browser's restricted zones.
I will scan the system with it occasionally, but I don't rely on it.

AVG is a virus scanner. It's not the same kind of product as a
malware scanner like Spybot.

When does your OneCare subscription expire (or has it already expired)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Can I install Microsoft Security Essentials [or any other
anti-virus/anti-spyware application] to clean up my already-infected
computer?

And Spybot often goes for much longer than a week between updates. And
another thing about it - it doesn't play well with Vista's and Win7's
UAC. You have to explicitly run it as Adminstrator in order for it to
clean anything. It's very annoying to do a lengthy scan, only to find
out that you forgot that step and wasted your time. At this point, I
don't expect that to be fixed. I get the distinct impression that the
developers have lost interest in the product.

My one care expirs in Sept.if I had known that is was a program that is no
longer going to be available I wouldn't have pd for it in the first place.got
computer from son so not sure what was on it new.I use windows defender +AVG
on laptop(it has Vista) which seems to work well. Just need good one to get
rid of +keep the baddie's from gettin in. Again Thanks

Assuming you (not your son) installed OneCare in September 2009, what
anti-virus application was installed when your son gave or sold you the
computer and was the subscription current at the time?

NB: If the computer's already infected, neither Spybot nor any other

Just want to say thanks,I just went ahead and reinstalled Spy bot. Picked up
like 70+ virus and such.So much for live one care,its just doing a band up
job(not) anyway,Thanks for help.

You gotta be kidding NIls..... My Spybot has updates at least once a
week,,, and I've had up to 3.

Secondly, from what I know, I was always led to believe that Spybot is
primarily for 'dialers' and the like; I certainly wouldnt get rid of
it. Also, as of right now, it has 1,300,800 definitions which are
increasing at a dramatic rate as rip-off merchant try to find new ways
to steal your connection etc. (thats:: one million, three hundred
thousand and eighty defs.... probably more as I type.)

No, I'm not kidding. It's been years since they updated their
definitions more than once a week. Here's their list of updates since
2002:

As I said, I don't get rid of it because I like the Immunize feature.
But I've found other malware scanners (Malwarebytes and
SuperAntiSpyware) that I think are more on top of things and are more
reliable.
