My HP Laptop came with Sonic installed.

Is it required to run the DVD burner, or can I uninstall it?

You are posting in a "Windows XP" newsgroup. If you have Windows XP - you
do need a third party application to write to DVDs.

Thank you, that's good to know. Yes, I'm running XP Pro, SP3.

Two follow up questions -

Is Sonic the only software, or will Nero or others work with this drive?

Does MS Media Player require Sonic, or such, to burn CD's, or DVD's?

Thank you,

Sonic is not necessary in any form. There are *many* options, free and
cost, to write to/play various DVD formats (given you have the proper
hardware.

Burning CDs with Windows XP in a few ways requires no third party
application. Some others (such as bootable CDs) require a third party
application. Using Media Player does not.

Burning ANY DVD+/- RW/R requires third party software in Windows XP.
