All the updates being downloaded recently (past 3 days) is screwing up my
computer. Any suggestions about what we can not download???

Thank you, in advance.

Unfortunately, since the updates are designed to function perfectly with the
operating system; the fact that they are "screwing up" your computer means
that your computer is already "screwed up". Flatten and rebuild; I'll bet the
updates won't "screw up" an "unscrewed up" install.

Define "screwing up my computer" & which updates you've installed since 02
Aug-10?

Possibilities for WinXP SP3 include but are not limited to KB981852;
KB2183461; KB980436; KB2079403; KB2115168; KB982665; KB2251399; KB983582;
KB983583; KB2160329; KB981997; KB2264403; KB2286198 (all of which are either
Critical or Important security updates) plus the Aug-10 Malicious Software
Removal Tool.

Fun Fact: The Aug-10 updates are the largest release in MS history in terms
of volume of updates.

Ahhhh, as I suspected! Thank you, sir! I'm most grateful for your objective
input. It's just that I notice changes when trying to forward a URL via OE,
and Outlook pops up and it has not been set up yet, among some other things.
Secunia came up with a host of threats for the first time, and when I got
all the downloads completed, re-scanned, shut down a few times, etc. their
report was 100%. Sheesh, scared me before that last scan.

Again, hat's off to you!

Since you have Outlook installed, one of the security updates likely
reset Outlook as the e-mail editor in Control Panel, Internet Options,
Programs. Change it back to OE, and you should be good to go.

What Bob I said about OL (2003 & earlier only) updates.

Microsoft Outlook (2003 & earlier only) updates change the default mail
handler to Microsoft Outlook
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13
Related: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933450

Even if you Remove OL from your install of Office (2003 & earlier),
Microsoft Update will still offer OL updates. [OE MVPs made MS well aware
of this bug...except that they wouldn't consider it a bug & refused to fix
it!]

Reference:

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP ("Let me fix it myself"
section)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

To avoid this, configure Automatic Update to the "Notify Only" setting where
you must Approve the download of every update as well as which updates are
installed & when they're installed. Then never Approve an OL update.

Caveats:

1. Not installing an OL update may put OL Calendar at-risk if you use this
function.

2. In months like this when so many updates are released, you're
screen-reader's gonna be working overtime. <wink>

Tip: Run Secunia PSI *after* Automatic Updates has done its business. If
Secunia says you're missing a patch, chances are you're not. Automatic
Updates' detection logic is usually much more reliable than Secunia's.
