Slow Windows Explorer but fast network shortcuts

When I access my small 6 unit network, windows explorer basically stops,
yet my mapped drives and network drive shortcuts open instantly. I tried
dismounting mapped drives and deleting network shortcuts, but no joy.
The other boxes on the network are fine.
This started recently, and I can't seem to track down the cause. Any help?

Are you using My Computer to access Windows Explorer? Is it slow no matter
where you are browsing? Are your local drives fully functional?

My Computer, My Network Places or a windows explorer shortcut seems to make
no difference, yet a shortcut to a specific file or folder on another
computer opens immediately. Local drives are functional, the only problem is
opening explorer.

Try here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841978
The Explorer.exe process stops responding when you use network shortcuts
in Windows XP

You can prevent the automatic addition of shortcuts with a registry setting:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
NoRecentDocsNetHood = 1

http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt...sNetHood+slow+network&fr2=sb-top&fr=yfp-t-501

Also, make sure that Windows isn't scanning for Scheduled Tasks on
remote computers, delete the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} key at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt...060F5BF}+slow+network&fr2=sb-top&fr=yfp-t-501

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoRecentDocsNetHood
= 1

worked until I rebooted. Now I'm back to My Network Places not working.
Scratching my head here.
