Slow USB

My hardware supports USB 2.0, I recently added a card with 4 ports but I am
getting messages telling me that my devices should be plugged into faster
USB

Device Manager is a bit poor re USB info.

How do I ensure all my USB connections are upgraded to USB 2.0?

Buy USB devices that say they are USB 2.0 compliant?

Your device manager under Universal Bus Controllers will list an Enhanced
Host Controller - that's USB 2.0

Re: Slow USB - How to upgrade?

Yes, thanks, I'm aware of all that. Under USB Controllers in Device Manager
I have listed as follows:

Generic USB Hub
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Composite Device
USB Composite Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

Front of M/B has two USB ports
Rear has:
Two ports beside PS/2 socket
Five additional ports
4 Ports added on PCI card by me (these should be USB 2.0?)

How do I find out what is what here? i.e., what is USB 1.0. Do I need to
unistall everything - all drivers - and reinstall or what?

I'd guess your ports are all USB 2.0 with drivers for 2.0 plus
additional drivers for USB 1 compatibility. Unless the computer is a
few years old; I owned one or two which had USB 1 hardware on a port or
two.

That also means I don't know the source of your problem - sorry, I wish
I could help.

I almost missed your (slightly OT) post, since you wrote it as a quote.

In most cases, you can easily tell if a cable is USB 2.0. Cables have
text written along their length. If the cable's label includes "USB
2.0" or "High-Speed", it's USB 2.

I usually need a magnifier and a bright light to read it :)

Thanks guys.

Useful info. Wonder what USB 3.0 will bring?

Broken budgets?

I won't be upgrading to 3.0 until (unless?) I get another computer. For
one thing, both desktop computers here are all-in-ones, so they're not
really upgradable. For another, see my first paragraph :)

I understand that 3.0 is 10x faster than 2.0 and also backwards
compatible, so I would surely enjoy backing up (to an external drive)
more than I do now.

To me, this change makes more sense than the current drive to push 3D
television and monitors...See paragraph one again.

Read "PC Mag's" review of USB 3.0. Real world speeds are nowhere near what's
advertised - however it will be significantly faster. Too bad Intel is doing
nothing on board development containing USB 3.0 till 2011.

From what I've read, it will boost real speeds by a factor of
five. That's not a bad soeed increase. A file transfer that would
take 20 minutes under USB 2 would take 4 minutes under USB 3.

Why wait for Intel to come around? I wouldn't be surprised if any of
several other makes come to market sooner and at a better price.
