Since a couple of days ago, when I click on a toolbar menu, it takes a long
time for the menu to drop down, and when I choose a command from the menu, it
takes a long time for the command to execute--e.g., when printing a Word doc
or doing a "Save as" in Word or PowerPoint. Any suggestions on how to
troubleshoot this issue?

Other issues may be at fault but the easiest to check is: Have you recently
lost connection with a mapped network drive? This is one of the most common
reasons for Office to hang when doing what you are talking about.

Thanks. Can I ask you how to check for such a lost connection? (Obviously,
I'm no techie.)

Since you are asking for additional help to determine network connection
issues I have to assume that you have connected a computer to a network of
some type.

Open My Computer or Computer depending on your operating system. Once open
double click on each drive letter in turn. Any that shows an error are not
available for one reason or another. To disconnect any not available simply
right click on the drive letter and then left click on disconnect. Do not
click on any thing that says CD or DVD as a drive name (may be drive D: or
E: on your computer.
