Security Status Bar Missing in IE8

E

Hello:

I installed IE8 about two days ago, and I don't see the security status icon
near the addres bar, where I believe it should be. I no longer see the
locked icon near address of a secure site. Nor do I see a way to get "more
inof about this site" by right-clicking on the address bar icon.
How can I get these back?

Thanks:

Make sure that the (unspecified example) site you are visiting is properly
secure. You won't see that feature if it isn't.

Yes..I'm seeing it on some sites, such as email and where I pay my phone
bill...But the icon disappears once I'm sign in. I guess that's how it is
meant to be?

If the icon disappears, then something in the page is not being viewed
securely. There might be an image, for instance, being pulled from a
non-secure URL. IE only shows the padlock if everything on the page is being
viewed securely. Normally IE will warn you if you are viewing a site that
contains unsecure content and asks you if you want to view it without the
non-secure parts loaded, just pick the right option to retain padlock
(although some elements of the page may then not be loaded).

For example, when I go to G Mail and am not yet logged in, I see the padlock
to the right of the address bar, but once I'm signed in and the email is
viewable, the padlock icon disappears.

Which setting do I need to readjust , if that icon should remain there after
the page loads?

ADDENDUM:

On the other hand, when I go to my phone bill account and banking account,
the padlock icom remains. So perhaps this is as it should be. Its gmail,
google claendar and yahoo email in which the padlock is there at login
page, but disapears once login is completed and email is drawn up..

After you've signed in to Gmail, is the URL (still) https://mail.google.com?

Open Internet Explorer (only) to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com OR
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate | Select CUSTOM and scan |
Install any Critical Security Updates offered (e.g., KB980182). If a Root
Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software updates category on
the left-hand side of the scan results window, install it to take full
advantage of IE8's enhanced security.

Test.

Hello again:

I was able to get that padlock icon to remain in Google mail after the login
by disabling the WOT (Web of Trust) add-on.

I realized this when I found it remained visible when IE was in Safe Mode.
By trial and error, it was the WOT add-on that appears to have made that
icon disappear. Odd...

In Yahoo email, its different. The Yahoo log- in page shows the padlock, but
once I go to Yahoo mail, it goes away even with WOT disabled. However, this
might be a bit different from Google mail in that same happens in Firefox
with Yahoo mail in terms of the padlock on bottom of page there. Google
Calendar is the same. They disappear once the log in is achieved.

WOT (www.mywot.com) installed here and cannot reproduce this behavior.

Given your posting history in various MS newsgroups (which is pretty
difficult to determine specifically since you post using the common email
alias someone@somebody.com with usernames like 'eli' & 'ira' & yes, I have a
pretty good memory), I think you may have been dealing with an infected
computer for the year or so. Of course YMMV but your best bet may be as
follows:

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP: See
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps and/or Method 1 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and
before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been
freshly formatted:

Tip: After getting the computer fully-patched, download/install KB971029
manually: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029

NB: Any Norton or McAfee free-trial that came preinstalled on the computer
when you bought it will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is
reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the free-trial and download/run the
appropriate removal tool before installing any updates, Windows Service
Packs or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application
(which will require WinXP SP3 to be installed).
